Perfect Patterns

Perfect.
An eyespot evolved so perfectly that even the curvy bit of reflected light, the part nonartists forget to include, is there.
Perfect.

Perfect.
Perfect pattern.
Perfect positioning.
You rascal, you've lined up your pseudolichenylooking scale patch with the real lichens on this rotting oak stump.

I bow to your perfection.
Me, in my light brown skin with no particular pattern at all.

Perfect is right. The first looks like the most beautiful bejeweled thing ever. And the second is an amazing job of blending in. Nature is so awesome in so many ways.

Treebeard and I are intrigued by your butterfly. We can't figure out what it is. Can you ID it for us??

Happy New Year!
That butterfly was at the Butterfly exhibit at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Florida.
It could easily be an exotic species since they host both natives and exotics in their amazing butterfly house.

I don't know what kind of butterfly it was, just that it was awesome and there were a bunch of them.

The butterfly is an aptly named Owl Butterfly, Caligo memnon. They are from Central and South America and the caterpillars feed on banana leaves.

Doug!
I was hoping you were going to drop in on this one!
Thanks!

It's a Caligo, or owl butterfly. Oh. I see Doug beat me to it.
Perfect post, Mr. Poet Who Don't Know It.
