Chicks! Chicks! She Did It!

We have chicks! Woo Hoo!!!

We have a free ranging flock of 5 banty yard birds. For a while only 4 were showing up to roost at night and I thought this hen, known as "That Blonde Hen" had been eaten by a predator.

Then she showed up for breakfast one day.

Then she disappeared again.

I figured she was brooding something, but I could not find her. I looked everywhere...almost.

One day last week, I bent down to pick up a paper cup THAT ONE OF MY KIDS HAD CARELESSLY DISCARDED and found myself staring at this hen. An old ice chest was leaning against a post and she was under it.

Two days later I went to check on her and she was strolling around with 6 brand new chicks. They are all in protective custody now while the chicks grow big enough to stand a chance out in the yard.

This is TOO COOL! A first time event for the Pure Florida homestead.Posted by Picasa

  5. You lucky duck! We are having a real problem with coyotes these days and I would be afraid to have the chickens running around here.

They are awfully cute though...the chicks, not the coyotes.

Do you have a recipe for Minorcan chicken? Heh. Just kidding.

Pablo---don't you think they should be a little bigger?!
