Walking Around The Homestead: The Pond

At last the pond. It is rapidly shrinking as our dry season rolls on. So far, the water quality is still good and the fish are okay, but I am getting a little nervous about their future.

After tropical storm Frances, I would have been underwater had I stood in this same spot. It is the nature of our sandy FL soils that ponds go up and down, so this fluctuating pond is normal. A "drawdown" is really good for a pond. It allows the organic muck that builds up on the bottom to be dried and oxidized. Later, when the pond refills, it's more productive. Of course, I don't want to lose my fish, so I am hoping for only a partial drawdown. I am blessed with a layer of grey marine clay beneath this pond that holds water pretty well.

This series of posts ends here. You'll have to scroll down to Wednesday's first post to start the walk. Posted by Picasa

Funny how the uneven ground can give our shadows such a lumpy appearance. For this reason, and this reason alone, I try never to include a photo of my shadow. Might make me look unfit or something.

I probably won't get to post tomorrow cuz of traveling, so I wish you and your fine family a wonderful holiday!!!

Pablo,
In my shadow's defense, it's an oversize blood donor T-shirt.

Thank you for the kind wishes, same to you. No RR post? Me too, going to mom's and she and dad are not into these newfangled computer thingies.
Safe journey.

I just read the post with the pretty blue flowers and saw that it's 36 degrees there. Yikes. That's a bit nippy. Hope you're all staying warm. Maybe you'll get some rain soon and that pond will fill right up. Keep us posted. Thanks for the tour.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving with your family. Safe travels and good cheer.

RD,
Thank you. It's already up to 56 F now at lunch time, beautiful blue skies with a light breeze. Spectacular!

Have a great, safe Thanksgiving!
