Cooper's Hawk (?) At Payne's Prairie

Birders, help me out here.
Is this rascal a Cooper's?

It's not a puzzler, I'm looking for either validation or correction.

  1. Red eyes and black cap.
He shares those traits with singer
    Alice P. Cooper.

  2. Pretty bird!
    Oh wait that's for parrots!

  3. I am guessing it is a sharp-shinned. There are more of them around and like coniferous forests.

  4. Nice pictures and it was nice of the bird to turn around so you could see both sides.

  5. Fantastic pics!

I'm thinking Cooper's... based on this bird's *cap* instead of a hooded look and the roundish shape of the tail.

    Look at the eyes!

  6. I think it's a Cooper's. The tail is rounder and has a wider white band on the tip of it's tail. Beautiful capture!

  7. I would vote Cooper's. We were taught to look at the tail. C shaped tail equals Cooper's and square shaped equals Sharp-Shinned and that sure looks like a C shaped tail to me.

  9. Coopers. Handsome fellow. We haven't seen Hannibal and the Missus in the oak out front yet this year but we expect them anytime.

Those darn things are getting to be like rats down here.
But boy those pics are awesome!

  13. Those are the red eyes of a cooper's hawk. But I'd want a second opinion, too. Excellent captures! I'm jealous.
