Eastern Hercules Beetle

I stopped to get ice at one of those automated self-serve ice stations in a rural area and this Hercules Beetle was dead beneath the overhead light.
That is one BIG beetle.
Minimalist post today, gotta be somewhere!

  4. In all my years in Florida, I've only seen two of those. They seem like something that should have gone out with the dinosaurs. They are amazingly strong. It's next to impossible to confine one in your hand. Their sharp little feet pull them right out. Great photo!

  8. Hey y'all,
Yes, this is in that rhino beetle group. Shame he was dead, I suppose he might have been swatted by some freaked out ice customer at the ice station where I found him.

And Patio, Bear is excellent and really should get a post here soon, doncha think?
