To continue our cypress theme, here's a little bit of swampy greenness. Duckweed covers the surface. What a well named plant. If you have ever seen mallards feeding on duckweed you know they love it...must taste like mocha almond fudge ice cream to them. Posted by Picasa

  1. Duckweed is supposedly very high in protein; those ducks know a good food source when they see one!

  2. Does Duckweed do any damage to the other wildlife living in the water? It looks like algae to me, but I am not very knowledgeable about this stuff.

  3. Deb,
I had always heard that it was very nutritious. I know my pet Mallards would go crazy over it when I would bring some back.

    Hick,
Duckweed is a true vascular plant, not an algae. I believe it is the world's smallest flowering plant. Picture 2 tiny oval leaves, about the size of sesame seeds with tiny roots hanging down into the water. That's a duckweed plant.

Duckweed is not detrimental to my knowledge, although a good crop would cut down on light getting down to submerged plants.
