Next to the Headquarters for the Florida National Guard is this small military cemetery. The pyramid marks a mass grave of soldiers defeated in a battle with the Seminole Indians. Research the Dade Massacre to learn more...
There are several hundred headstones/monuments in this cemetary and I have weedeated (is that a word?) around all of them. My dad has the contract to maintain the cemetary grounds and I've given him a hand a few times. The weedeating takes several hours but it's the only way to get around the headstones. The headstones are marble and are bleached before any event or ceremony that takes place at the cemetary.
He's had the contract for several years. I help him on occasion. It takes 4 to 5 hours to weedeat. There are some recent headstones to go along with all the old ones. Kelly's uncle, a WWII, vet is buried there. He was cremated and his ashes buried between the flag and coquina stage at the north end.

ReplyDeleteThe Florida State Seminoles still are beating up on most people.
ReplyDeleteHoss,
ReplyDeleteThat's because they mostly play wimpy teams...when their players aren't in jail....
(my wife the gator fan would be proud of me for that one)
Kevin,
I had no idea your dad did that.

ReplyDeleteI'm proud of you for the Seminole remark, too.
Interesting! I don't think I've ever seen a pyramid in a cemetary before...
ReplyDeleteI'll bet you use up a lot of weedeater cord going around all those stones!
Off to look up the Dade Massacre!
Rurality,
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your homework assignment!
