Deer Readers

Florida deer tend to run small compared to other states. I don't know the reason for that. It could be poor nutrition due to our soils. I have never researched it, but I know that my deer hunting friends love to go to GA or SC where the deer are much bigger on the average.

This little deer is looking a kind of scruffy. Maybe it's ticky. I took this photo at Manatee Springs State Park which is tickiest place I have ever tromped through. I have literally sat a picnic table in the park and watched ticks crawling towards me through the leaf litter.

A coworker of mine, Bobby, was on his way to hunt deer in Georgia when he saw a large 12 point buck that had apparently just been struck on the side of the road. Being an avid deer hunter, he pulled over thinking he could salvage one of the beautiful antlers.

Bobby got out of his truck, walked to the deer, and took hold of an antler. He gave it a mighty twist to snap it off.

That was when the huge buck stood up.

Now Bobby had his hands full of the pointy end of a confused, ticked off deer. Apparently, this deer wasn't killed instantly when it was struck. They stared at each other face to face. Bobby hung on for a moment, afraid to let go, and then the deer collapsed again...this time for good.

He showed me the antler as he told me this story so it must be true.

Aren't all hunting and fishing tales true?

  1. Oh but of course! The big difference between some of my fishing stories and your friend's buck story is that he had something to show for it!
Of course, fish are rather slippery little critters and taking a "trophy fin" has never gained much popularity. All I could show you would be my empty hook and furrowed brow.

  2. Ha! That reminds me of that dumb movie where two dumb guys stick a "dead" buck in their car and the deer is not dead yet. I hated that movie and so I'm glad that I don't even remember the name of it, but that part was funny.

I'm not a big fan of deer and what they do to my flower garden...they are well fed in this part of the woods. Bah!

  3. That's the best one I've heard since Granny told me the one about the groundhog getting loose in her momma's car. Which turned out to be true.

  4. Good story. It must be true if there is proof. We used to see deer around here once in a while now it is too built up but what we do still have is wild hogs. I took a picture of some right on the road as I was leaving early one morning - have to find it and post that picture.

  5. Weary,
I have a bunch of empty hook tales myself :)

    Hick,
I saw the add for that movie, but saved my money. The deer are just waiting for my lettuce to get a little bit bigger.

    Mac,
I had an octopus get loose in the car once...I feel a story coming up.

    Doubleknot,
I have seen some enormous road killed hogs lately. They must be on the move. Last night, the deer were so thick on the roads...you practically had to weave between them.

  6. Just wanted to chime in on the request for the octopus story. Sounds like it could be a good one. When I was young, we once had a mouse in the car. It ran on my father's shoe while he was driving. It caused quite a bit of pandemonium. I never quite felt "safe" in that car again. I always expected a mouse to come out of the car seat at any time.

  7. Bound to be true. A guy wouldn't just pick up some old antler that got shed would he? And then make up a story like that? Nah.

  8. RD,
I have an escaped pet rat in the car story to with the octopus story. The rat one did not have a happy ending...actually, neither did the octopus.

    Hoss,
No, I can't imagine anyone doing something like that ;)

  9. DPR,
I'm picturing his drunk butt sliding down that embankment. LOL! At least he wasn't driving...or dead.

  10. What a cute deer. The best way to shoot deer is with a camera.

  11. Sorry, I really don't have any fishing stories, but lightnig could probably come up with a few! My best attempts only come up with better bait fish for her!

  12. Well, I thought I could top this, but after reading the comments, nah - mine is just a little story.

Still - last night, just by chance, driving home there was a deer in the road. Not an uncommon thing although usually they're lurking on the side waiting to jump out and attack the car. This one was a two-pointer buck - two points on one side of his head and nothing on the other.

    Could this be a reincarnation?

In any event "not magnificent", as they don't say.

  13. Abandoned,
Most of the time, I agree. When they eat my garden, I get hungry for venison.

    Thunder,
That's the job of the first mate.

    Wayne,
Maybe...it was a GA deer afterall. We had a piebald deer running around here for a year or so. That's pretty neat!

  14. A friend of mine who lives in Wisconsin checks the highway in the winter and marks all the deer that have been hit by autos. He comes back 6 to 8 hours later and loads up the recent road kills. He has a freezer full every year without pulling the trigger.Georgia led the nation a couple years ago with 39,000 deer struck and killed by autos. For all those anti hunters maybe we need to ban autos also.
