Redlight Foods And Random Thoughts While Home Alone With A Blackeye

What's your redlight food?
I am home alone today...well alone with 3 dogs, 2 pigs, and an assortment of chickens. Last Friday, I went back to the perky skin doc so she could remove a bit of my forehead.
She likes to talk to you while she's injecting, drawing, slicing, cauterizing, and stitching on you. I like this (the talking part) too so we had quite the conversation.
This was more interesting than the previous back op, because she was working just above my left eye, so I had a good view of the action. I asked her the usual medical questions, then we talked about chickens...seems her friend had a chicken that laid green eggs. So I told her about araucana chickens and she seemed delighted to have learned something about poultry.
She explained to me that she had 2 options on the stitch up. She could hide the scar in a wrinkle ( Hey! What wrinkle?) if she ran the stitch horizontally, but it might give me a slight "SPOCK" effect due to the need to pull up from the eyebrow.
I don't think she knew how appealing that was to me. I LOVE the original STAR TREK series and Spock, with his strength, nobility, and faithfulness is a favorite character. It's really difficult to do that eyebrow thing he does and if this operation could allow me to...
Still, I guess a permanent raised eyebrow might be a problem. Everyone you spoke with would think you were doubting what they said..." Did you see the look on his face, he didn't believe a word we said.." Then there would be that uncomfortable silence whenever someone used the phrase, " That really raised some eyebrows".
Reluctantly, I decided on the vertical scar. My dreams of Vulcanization would have to wait. If you're not a Trekkie, I know you're shaking your head right now. It's okay.
The good news was, I got the all clear signal and I just have to check in about twice a year for monitoring.
She warned me that I would have a black eye and some swelling and sure enough I did. So, I'm home from work today while my eye recovers.
The picture with this post is of my "Redlight" food. A friend of mine was doing the WeightWatcher thing once and she informed me that redlight foods were the high calorie foods that you loved, ate too much of, and simply could not resist.
Now, I don't diet, but I do have a redlight food...Fried Chicken. I love it. I never get tired of it. As a teen, I had a job at the Crescent Beach Maryland Fried Chicken restaurant one summer. The manager said we could eat for free..."I won't lose money, because pretty soon you'll get sick of chicken" Poor ignorant fool...
So ...What's Your Redlight Food?
Ok, I'll bite. What's this about a black eye?
ReplyDeleteMy surmise is that he acquired the black eye as a consequence of the surgery near his eye.
ReplyDeletePablo and Thunder,
ReplyDeleteYou must have jumped in there before the story. Pretty sneaky!
Pretty much anything fried or anything sweet.
ReplyDeleteYay on the all clear signal!
Glad to hear you got the "see you twice a year" report. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteThat raised eyebrow could also have been mistaken for a California "I want to look like Joan Rivers" facelift. You made the right decision. You may not look like Spock, but you also won't look like Joan!
Redlight foods-- any snack that's crispy, fried and salty. Yum potato chips. Yum crackers.
Yep, I guess I jumped the gun on you today!
ReplyDeleteMy "redlight" food is chicken wings. Hot, spicy, fried wings! And of course the obvious, beer!
as per your previous comment about not wanting to scare folks away from your blog with the pictures of your stiches, I'd say you'd be doing them a service! You never know, it could save a life. I hope the recovery goes smooth and maybe you actually will get one distinguished scar that would make any Trekkie proud.
ReplyDelete(I was shaking my head at the reference, but I was laughing too. LOL!)
My red light food is chocolate, or.. hmmm, any type of Italian food, especially if it has melted cheese; or country fried steak with mashed potatoes and biscuits, or ohhh, a big ol' country brex with sausages and bacon and grits and toast and .... I think I better stop here before I get fat just typing this!
Good choice on the scar. You didn't want to have to explain over and over again about how the arch was invented. And, foo, you are the fount of all knowledge --araucana chickens, indeed.
ReplyDeleteI hate to confess this, but my redlight is vienna sausage.
RD,
ReplyDeleteCan we talk? No, I do not want to look like Joan. With you on the chips. I avoid them for weeks at a time and then scarf afew handfuls.
ThunderD,
Oh yeah, wings are hard to resist. Hey we can make those when you come down!
Laura,
I heartily approve of your redlight food list. I like the fact that chocolate came first!
Hoss,
Viennas? Oh no. I just never could get one down...that and "potted meat" ...shudder
DPR,
Glad you are okay. Pretty healthy antioxidant redlight choices!
Rurality,
ReplyDeleteHow can it be bad if it's fried and breaded? Fried shrimp, fried fish, fried chicken, fried pork chops, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken...
That's good to hear about the all clear.
ReplyDeleteStrictly from the definition, I can't say as there are any high calorie foods these days that I love, eat too much of, and simply cannot resist. But then again I make it a point to not buy Ben & Jerry's ice cream lately; removing the temptation solves criteria #2 and #3. ;)
But then there's beer. You can't eat too much beer, because you don't eat beer, you drink it. So I get off on a technicality.
I have to pick only one redlight food? I could eat an old shoe if it were covered in melted cheese of any sort.
ReplyDeleteDeb,
ReplyDeleteBen and Jerry's Chunky Monkey has snagged me a time or two. One nice thing about living so far from the store is, I never crave anything enough to get back in the car and drive a 30 mile roundtrip...
Pablo,
What kind of cheese?
I would stay home also your students would not believe anything other than the misses poped you!
ReplyDeleteRick,
ReplyDeleteI know, tomorrow exactly 145 kids will ask, "What happened to you?"
Glad to hear you are doing well. Twice a year now - keep it up and good luck. I am off to a doctor today and another one Thursday. They want to operate on my knee but my room mate is having surgery on his shoulder at the same time and I have to be able to help him out so I am putting my old bones on hold for a while.
ReplyDeleteFood - oh if I could eat what I liked without getting sick - ice cream - Ben and Jerry's, chocolate, any kind, cheese - I could go on but there is one thing I can eat that doesn't make me sick and that is jelly beans. I just wish they would make more of the black ones - love them.
So many redlight foods and so little time...
ReplyDelete...fried chicken is definitely atop my list along with potato chips and sour dough bread with melted parmesan cheese and...
GREAT NEWS on the skin stuff...I would have passed out. In fact, when I was pregnant and had to have a blood test, the nurse had to snap one of those "faint stoppers" under my nose. Then I went on to have 3 c-sections and an appendectemy...I've almost passed out in more doctors offices than I care to admit.
Kodijack,
ReplyDeleteWe are of like mind. Fried Chicken rules!
Doubleknot,
Hope those Dr trips go okay. Chocolate is definitely an essential food group.
Hick,
I have stood around one C section and if it were happening TO me, I would prefer to faint also. Fried chicken too? I see a trend.
Xariklea,
Good list! I have to pass on the livers and the okra, but the rest sounds great!
Hey ya'll forgot fryed catfish with hushpuppies, creamy cole slaw, scalloed tomatoes, greens made with bacon or fatback, grits with real butter and a pitcher of sweet iced tea...
ReplyDeleteNot that any of you had bad choices.
Cracker first okra now vieana sausage??? Can you answer this Hurricane triva... how many sausages in a can of viena sausage?
I came by nic name the hardway I earned it bite by bite...
Fatman,
ReplyDeleteI have to go with 7.
Fried fish and hushpuppies...mmmmmm.
This is really bad- chiccarones, fried pork rinds. The real deal, from the local Sabor Latino. Now I'm really hungry.
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss your second surgical adventure here? Boy was I snoozing! And I'm sorry to be last in line to say:
SUNSCREEN! MORE SUNSCREEN! My go around with BCC included removing a chucnk the size of a golf ball from the middle of my forehead and another above my lip- neither of which was visable before the surgery. The good news is now, a year later, I really can't see evidence unless I look closely. The better news is I have a totally wrinkle free forehead- they needed all those wrinkles in the repair. Amazing what they can do. By now, I imagine you're back up and running just fine.
So- are you doing Wayne's watershed meme? huh?huh? I'm thinking about writing about my little watershed at Wit's End and if I get to it before you do, you're tagged again.
Vicki,
ReplyDeleteI get MY forehead and shoulder stitches out tomorrow. Oh the joy!
I'm feeling a little like Frankenstein at the moment...no neck bolts yet...
I want to do the Watershed meme as soon as possible, it's just been whacky around here. I was lucky to have written the coquina post way ahead of time or it would have been even lighter here lately.
