Shhhh...Don't Tell The Florida Tourism Department

Not to burst anybody's balloon, but it gets cold as a dreamsicle fresh out of the freezer down here in Florida. Last week had us in the mid-20's for a couple of nights and the highs barely hit 50. It's a damp cold too that gets in ya'.

The picture is of Emma and Kate scraping the ice off their truck before driving to school. They're using their drivers licenses or some other plastic card from their purses...we don't usually carry ice scrapers in our Florida cars.

Florida freezes...just ask my severely frost-nipped banana trees.

  1. Builds character. They'll both probably go to college in Minnesota and be glad to have the skill.

  2. Pablo,
I hadn't thought of that. Hey, it's about to get busy here and I won't be commenting any more til the day is over, but I tried to comment on RRJ today and nothing seemed to post. Don't know if it's my end (at work) or yours with the new server.

  3. It's good for them to have this wintry experience. They'll tell their grandchildren someday about how they scraped the frost (frost? they'll exclaim, what's that?) from their windshield. Oh it was hard. Their hands froze. But afterwards, they were stronger for it.

So, has Kate applied to college? (In my former life I was a student advisor, I love talking college with kids.)

  4. Ohhhhh Daaaaaad not another picture for the blog! LOL.

Hey I had a problem with RRJ this morning too. Then I tried to back up and hit "post" again... It told me, "Looks like you already said that"!

  5. Well, I dunno. Must be some switch somewhere that needs throwing. I've alerted my webmaster, but it's still early out there in Oregon. Oddly, I just found that I cannot leave a second comment at Rurality. I wonder if this is some ripple effect from the government's recent cyber war games. You know those bloggers. They are threats to the nation and all!

  6. The 20's are cold, but we were at 6F on Sunday morning. Now that's just too cold!
One thing you can pass on to the girls is that even though we have a real winter up here every year, we still don't enjoy scraping the windshield! In fact, that's one of the things I hate most about winter!

  7. Okay, my webmaster tells me that the problem is fixed. If you still have a comment to make at Roundrock Journal, please give it another try.

And thanx to FC for letting me leave these comments about my blog on his blog.

  8. Why, FC. I'm sitting here basking in the sun, it's 68 degrees and perfect! Our three little citrus trees have held up nicely- I'll post a picture tomorrow. Maybe St. Pete is just south enough of you. In the meantime, I thought of you with my post today.

Here's hoping those banana trees didn't get too badly nipped.

  9. Genuine banana-making banana trees? I didn't know Florida was far enough south for that. How big a crop do you get?

  10. Scraping frost off car windows, I have to do that way too often. And then the other week I had to clean a foot or more of snow off the totality of my car. But that was more fun because it doesn't happen so often and it's the time when one meets one neighbors.

  11. By the way, do you have heaters and defrosters in your cars down there? Up here, we just start the car and turn the defroster on high then go in and have breakfast. When we come out, the job is done. (Of course, you guys sweeten your tea down there too.)

  12. I remember those freezes real well when we were in Gainesville. We did the same thing as Pablo did, just start the car to run the defroster and head inside for a little while while it did it's job. worked wonders!

On the other hand, way down here in Tampa Bay, we had frost on our windshields last week! I got a pict of it on the car, LOL!

  13. Note to all,
Can you tell I am back to remodeling again. Here it is 10pm and I am just getting to sit down and read your comments.

    Pablo,
Glad your problem was fixed. We do have defrosters, but turning them on ahead of time would require having a relaxed morning with no rushing out at the last minute. As if...

    RD,
Kate is applying for beaucoup scholarships and a local college. She's way more organized than I ever was at that age...or now.

    DPR,
The ocean must have a great moderating effect on your temps. I have noticed that your winter is fairly mild.

    ThunderDave,
We hit 3 degrees back in '89.

    Vicki,
It's warmer here today, those pics were about a week ago...I still use film. Glad your citrus grove is doing well. I read your post, that guy is very good.

    Tim,
We would love to have a foot of snow. The whole state would shut down for play time.

    Laura,
Sure that works for you punctual types. :)

    Hoss,
Genuine nanner trees, but they have to get through the winter to make nanners. That's the hard spot.

    Rurality,
    Captive models!
I did the same thing at Pablo's and got the same you're repeating yourself idiot message. He used to be so nice...

  14. It snowed one time when I was a kid in Southern California and I'll never forget it. It was so memorable to me that I wrote a post about it on Feb.20,2006 titled "roller skating on ice."

It was probably just a heavy frost...but how was I supposed to know...I was just a kid.

  15. LMAO...I'll trade you my -8 with a -18 windchill....:)

Put a sweater on and enjoy it!!

  16. Abandoned,
I need to go read that one, it sounds like fun.

    Girlgone,
Brrrr! My monitor froze up when I read that!

  17. Our snow is almost melted. It's supposed to be in the 60's here today...what's up with that?

(Isn't it against the law for ice to reside in Florida?)

  18. We had a frosty morning here also but I didn't have to go anywhere so I just wrote ice on my truck - my room mate would have had a fit if I had written on his new truck. It was all gone within a couple of hours and I do believe that is all we are going to get this year.

  19. I didn't realize you would catch a frost as far south as you are there. I learn something new every time I come here!

  20. Weary,
1989... 4 degrees, ice storm coated everything, Gainesville w/o power for a week in areas, roads covered in ice, accidents galore. We don't get it much, but we get slapped every once in a while.
