I found this while cleaning the boat yesterday. This was attached to a tow strap of nylon webbing that I had thrown up on the bow and left for months.
Each "urn" was carefully sealed. This was totally new for me.
I opened one urn with my pocket knife. This looks more "beelike" than the wasp larvae I expected to see.
Bugnerds?

I've never seen that particular configuration before -- still inclined to think it is some sort of potter wasp.

Swampy, I didn't notice any recognizeable meal remnants and I didn't open any of the other urns. I felt bad about sacrificing this baby...whatever it is. I placed the rest in a plant in a hanging basket on the porch.

Perhaps the nest is distinctive enough for an ID - have you sent it to Bugguide.net by any chance?
OhMan!! That is sooooo cool! I have never seen anything like that. Very humbling also to see that a little bug can make a better coil pot than I can. Especially when you think mine would have to be about my size and keep that wonderful proportion etc.

hmm...you're right, it does look more like a bee than a wasp...Still though, that "pottery" looks a lot like the work of a dirtdobber. We have a few of them on our back porch.

This is something different, even though the idea is similar.
That looks like a dirt dobber to me also...I've never seen bees build this type of structure? I've opened some of the other chambers before and found dead spiders that the wasps sealed into the chamber so I guess the baby wasps could eat.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Swampy - looks like potter or mason wasps, maybe. We just have the usual Anasazi-like dobber nests. I haven't seen anything like that. Very nice structures - I love pottery shaped like that.
