Jr. was nice (ham) enough to pose for me. It's a sign of his hamminess and his familiarity with his goofy Dad that he never questioned why he was putting a 15 pound turkey on his head.
I was really looking for a 14.7 pound turkey, but I could only find this 14.5 pounder. I suppose the graniteware might give me the extra ounces I need to be "sorta accurate". Why don't we just round this to 15 pounds for simplicity.
So why the turkey on Jr.'s head? I'm working on a Powerpoint for my marine science class and I want my little brainiacs to visualize earth's atmospheric pressure of 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi).
It's one thing to say, "Atmospheric pressure at sealevel is about 14.7 psi", but it's a very different thing to say, " Every square inch of your body is feeling the weight of a 15 pound turkey"
Which would mean more to you?
I usually bring in one of my dumbells (STOP IT! BE NICE) so they can get a feel for the reality of 15 pounds.
Remember, the photo is symbolic. The pressure is not just applied to your head, it's applied equally over your body. It would have been more accurate to impale the turkey on a on inch dowel and have that balanced on Jr.'s head. Ouch.
Let's see, the average human has about 19 square feet of skin. One square foot = 144 square inches ... 19 multiplied by 144 = 2736 dowels and 2736 15 pound turkeys.
Feeling the pressure yet?
Be glad it's there. It's this pressure that keeps your body fluids from boiling away in a cloud of red mist.

I know we are getting our turkey fryer ready for the numerous practice meals until Thanksgiving. I especially love frying some sweet potatoes. We camp every Thanksgiving, so it is very important to have the taste of the season perfected!

Ahhh, hands on teaching, awesome! When I was in school in the 70's, we were taught to memorize these facts, over and over again. No wonder it didn't make sense at the time. I'm so glad times have changed.
