Flying Solo ... sorta.

"Hmmmm ... decisions, decisions."
Last week was full of the hubub of homecoming for our little school. I have some shots of a small town homecoming parade I'll share this week. They don't qualify as Florida nature images, but they sure give you a peak into small town Florida culture and they may even reassure you a little. It's not all South Beach bods, bikinis, and bmw's down here.
This week, Junior and his Mom are flying to Indianapolis for the annual National Future Farmers of America (FFA)convention. Junior is a little nervous ... he's never flown before.
So, while everybody's gone, it'll be me and the dogs running the place until sometime Saturday.
The dogs were pretty excited until I laid down the law about wild parties.
It seems they were already making plans, but I reminded them we were still missing a lampshade from their last little bacchanalia and I was not going to un-ductape the neighbor's cat for them this time.
I think they were listening, but I thought I saw a gleam in Feather's eye. I'm not sure if it was a mischievous gleam or her cataract catching the light, poor thing.
It could have been a gleam.
I'll keep an eye on them this time.

  1. Indianapolis? Why, people talk funny up there!

  2. The cats of Florida thank you for your diligence on their behalf.

Hey, I have a St Augustine question. Do you remember a restaurant there called (I think) Cowboys? Way out in the sticks on a pier over some body of water I don't remember.

  3. Guess what? I think they had already sent out invitations...or at least Mike was seen trying to hide an envelope in his kennel yesterday. Don't worry...I won't let him out of my sight or give him any duct tape.

  4. I thought dogs just chewed on duct tape. Who knew?

  5. It's too late. Buddy got an invitation via the barkemail, a chain of dog barks that echoed all the way downstate.
The plan is to wait till you go fishing, and then they're gonna let loose.
There was also something about the cows keeping watch to alert them in case you return early....

    just sayin'...

    Good luck to Junior!

  6. I hope Junior's first-time flight is a good one.

Those dogs will find any excuse to party. That's why they have that gleam in their eyes all the time. Maybe you could let them get into just a little bit of trouble (without injuring cats or other living things). It's good for them!

  7. I was reminded that St. Johns County is still small town-ish at Cracker Day this weekend at the fairgrounds. It's reassuring, for sure. Can't wait to see the photos.
And I have been looking into joining the FFA, but the nearest chapter is in Jacksonville, and I hate going into Jacksonville. I'll see what I can do, though.

  8. Just caught my two Dobies trying to slip through the gate. On was dragging a bag of horse manure and the other a bag of catnip. They muttered something about a party up north as I shooed them back into the yard. Something must be up. Keep an eye on things. Good luck to Junior. You know once you let him off the home place, he may not want to come back. Especially if he finds two Dobermans laying on your couch burping up horse manure and covered in cat hair.

  9. Pablo,
Yes, I noticed the distinct lack of twang and drawl when I flew there this summer.

    Wren,
That will be the day when a cat thanks me for anything ...
    :)
Cowboys is still there, still good, but it has been discovered, so you may stand in line.

    3C,
See? I knew it! Flounder told me he was just using the computer to play "World Of WarCraft" online.
    That stinker!

    Deb,
    I'm sure Red Green knew.

    Laura,
Isn't that just like a cow? Very, very sneaky.Tell the Budmeister to make other plans, I'm grounding these two pups.

    Robin,
Wasn't shredding everything we own for the first 3 years of their lives enough trouble?
    :)
This pair are octodogenarians and should be sleeping not twisting the night away.

    HTeen,
Bummer about no local FFA. Where do the farm kids from Hastings go to school?

    Cathy S,
What is it with the dog fascination with manure? One wonders if they were bringing it to make party snacks or just to roll in...
Glad you caught them in time.

  10. We will be expecting the first chapter of your novel by week's end you know. Idiot's Guide to Writing a Novel is a good book, but nothing substitutes for just getting it down on paper. Just write, fix it later is what I was taught.

  11. Did you send camera with Mom and Junior? I hope I hope;....

  12. The Hastings kids go to South Woods Elementary (you ought to hear all the "new residents" complaining about the fertilizers in use around that school), Gamble Rogers Middle, & Pedro Menendez High School. I was amazed that I couldn't locate an FFA chapter in St. Johns County.

  13. Cathy S,
Keep pushing Coach. I need that.

    Hoss,
Neither one has the photo bug, but JR has a good camera phone so maybe ...

    HTeen,
    Unbelievable.

  15. Sharon,
What is this fascination with cats?
    :)
