The family of deer (a spike buck, seveal does, and a couple of spotted fawns) that I see near my garden every day, have finally noticed how short and ineffective the garden fence is. This afternoon I went out to see if any of my tomatoes were turning red (they are!) and I found my gourd vines completely leafless. The deer didn't actually go in the garden, they didn't have to, the gourd vine was living dangerously by growing on the garden fence and even reaching beyond it to the nearby drooping live oak branches.
So now there's a naked vine with a bunch of bottle gourds hanging along the fence. It'll take some serious mitosis to repair the damage.
