I enjoy reading your blog far too much to ever want to see another photo of you like that up in the tree again. DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR? What you were doing was so damned dangerous that even I am not dumb enuf to try it. Good heavens, man, hire a service, but don't do this at home again! Don't you have little ones to worry about raising?
Ouch! The "little ones" guilt leverage was a nice touch. Effective tho...
What looks precarious is really well planned. It's hard to see in the photo, but the base of the ladder is blocked with a weight to prevent sliding. Also hard to see, the top of the ladder is strapped to the live oak branch with a ratchet tie-down so the ladder is one with the tree. Even harder to see, because the rope is green, there is a pulley and rope system rigged to control the falling branches I trim. The branch in front of the ladder has just been cut and is hanging from my rigging. The pole saw allows me to reach out and cut without leaning and I don't cut big branches higher than me. They don't fall up, so sticking to that rule is pretty important.
Calculated risks my friend. Thank you for your concern. Now I have to memorize all this and repeat it back to my wife so she'll quit telling me how crazy I am...
Rick, I remember playing spaceship on a big national guard ladder in your dad's backyard. I also remember jumping off with my space tether (rope) still attached and having the ladder fall over on me. Remember that? I think the grownups were having watermelon or something and called us and I just jumped without thinking.
Yea the big wooden ladder was being used to drill a well.I remember it falling and you escaping somehow with minor or no injuries.Although I made about 30 parachute jumps in the army I get scared when I put christmas lights on the roof of our house.I have a 12 foot rope on my tree stands to remind me this is high enough. If I got up that high on your ladder I probley would freeze and need help down.No word on shrimp so far, maybe too much rain, last year we caught our first bucket july 31.

Pablo,
My wife just read your comment and said to tell you she likes the way you think!
When my husband does things like this, I can't even bear to watch!
My wife feels the same way. I tried to get her to come for the view, but she declined...come to think of it nobody has taken me up on that offer yet.
Does that ladder come with a free parachute?
