Sand dollars. The one on the left is alive, the one on the right is dead. Sand dollars are Echinoderms (spiny skin) and you can see the short spines on the live dollar. These starfish cousins are everywhere on the flats.  Posted by Picasa

This is the first year we've ever seen live Sand dollars. They are very cool. I was surprised by their color. Up here they look almost mauve-ish. Gray with a hint of violet purple. Good job photographing them.

These produce an orange Iodine stain when handled. If you look carefully at my son's thumb, you can see the beginning of the stain.They are neat to hold, you can feel the short spines moving.
