Florida Fall Color

The tree leaves
are still jealously
holding on to their
chlorophyll.

Only the subtlest beginnings of color change in the trees, except for sweetgum which seems in a hurry to get naked.

This is the fruit of the coral honeysuckle, a good native honeysuckle. The flowers are pretty enough, but these fruits are no slouch when it comes to vibrant color. Posted by Picasa

I love coral honeysuckle. Although we have tons of hideous japanese honeysuckle, the legacy of past deer plantings, we've found exactly one coral honeysuckle and have pampered the dickens out of it. It's a marvelous vine now, produced stupefyingly brilliant flowers from March through May and produced hundreds of berries this summer. And then, one day, before I got to them, they were all gone.

Hopefully they'll reappear as progeny all over the county.

Wow. Talk about an eye opening picture first thing in the morning! Lovely.

I love honeysuckle too. I don't know what variety we had all around the fencing in our backyard when I was a kid, but it made for such a glorious smell. I guess it was that rarely seen "bigcityopolis suckleidicus" type.
