Walking Around The Homestead: Saw Palmetto

Walking down the sandy driveway will take us right past this gorgeous clump of palmettos. (The tiny palm front left is a pindo palm and not the point here)

Palmettos usually grow low and along the ground...not up. These are in semi-shade and are sporting tall (for them) trunks. Palmettos form great thickets and are rattlesnake heaven. As kids when it was time to cross a palmetto thicket, we would run through it as fast as possible, hoping to not have a foot touch ground long enough to be struck by a snake. We would emerge breathless and sliced to ribbons from the saw tooth edges of the palmetto fronds. Great fun.

Almost to the pond...

This photo is so evocative for me. Last February I sat in the middle of Wakiwa Springs backwater area and took in all the palms, the sandy soil, the bugs and the gentle sound of the springs bubbling in the background..... Fantastic, an almost prehistoric feeling.

Rick,
Those are the palmettos I was picturing when I wrote this.
