One more sign of Fall in the land of subtle changes, a very tired swamp sunflower plant laden with next years dreams.
This clump was beautiful a few weeks ago. They stood 8 teet tall and were a mass of yellow.
Now they are leaning almost at ground level, their leaves are sporting some mildew, and the blossoms are all but gone.
In a few weeks I will cut them down and toss 'em where I want more.
Beneath the soil in this spot, long white runners will already be seeking their way up for another go at life.
Interesting plant. They will stay as low, almost flat rosettes of a few green leaves for most of the year and then in the summer...near the end, they will suddenly shoot up to 10 feet and bloom.
For now though, it's time to rest a little.

fall? where? It was here in tampa bay for awhile, and then it disappeared.

i realllllly miss my home in gainesville at this time of the year!
and uh.. hope you were able to get all the feathers out of the fresh white paint. :) lol.. oh man.

Beautiful description of the natural process that rejuvenates life. Mine look the same, and I'll be doing the same, but I love the way you describe all the underworkings of the long, white runners, and how everything will spring to life next year, starting in the spring. Inspires a sense of hope that will hopefully carry me through the dead of winter.
