Those wacky Bums out on the left coast invited me to participate in the Ten Beautiful Birds meme. (Why does "invite" sound nicer and harder to refuse than "tag"?)
I dug through my archives and realized that all of my best bird shots date from my bachelor days when staying in a cramped hide all day was no big deal, because nobody needed me or would wonder where the heck I was...
Life's busier now, but it's also alot easier to get good photos with cameras that do everything and can zoom in to degrees that would have required a lens as long as your forearm back in the 80's when all of the photos in this meme assortment were taken. I wonder sometimes what I could have done with the time freedom I had then and the amazing digital tech of today...
These photos were all taken with a Minolta SRT-201, match needle camera, manual focus only on good ol' Kodachrome 64. Yes, I toted a tripod for serious bird photography.
Here we go...
Anhinga drying it's wings.
Green heron walking on flotsam, Lake Woodruff NWR.
One of Blogger loveable little quirks (using Picasa) is that I can not get lots of photos to upload in a single posting. So this post of 10 bird photos will be segmented into 3 posts today. Please scroll down for the remainder of the ten birds.

Wow. Wonderful pictures. Thanks for posting them.
Doubleknot,
Early bird! Thanks.
Just a note: I won't get to respond to anyone until after soccer practice tonight...busy day and I'm solo parentis for a few days.
These are some supurb photos. Thanks for sharing them.
My first SLR was a Minolta SRT-101. As I look back over my stock of photos, I have realized that some of my best results came from that camera. I guess there are some advantages to having to use the gray matter a little before you shot a photograph. On the other hand, the new technologies allow one to grab photos on the spur of the moment, in a way that is difficult with the older technologies.
I left a comment on the last in series, but wanted to say here too: Wow, FC. These are great photos of beautiful birds. Thanks so much for participating in the ten beautiful birds meme.
I had that same model camera. I think I was 13 or 14 when I saved up my paper route and babysitting money to buy it.
Nice photos!
Hal,
My first one was the SRT-101 also, but I used it diving with an Ikelight housing and eventually it got tired. Then a Minolta SRT-201 which I still have, then a Minolta X-700 which was electronic and totally unreliable junk.
Now a Nikon 65, but your essay on the coolpix 8800 has created a stirring...
RD,
Thank you for the invite!
Deb,
I got mine by working in a farm packing house for $1.60/hour.
These are great bird photos. Thanks for giving me the pleasure of seeing these photos. Love it.
dpr,
thanks, I still have bunches of slides to digitize. Need time!
Tim,
Glad you enjoyed them!
The green heron is beautiful. I keep going back and looking at him.
