Tree Trimming At Mom And Dad's
1 3
2 4
Here's the triple trunked Holly I took down at my folks house last week. The chronological sequence of the photos is TOP LEFT, BOTTOM LEFT, TOP RIGHT, BOTTOM RIGHT.
( I broke the step ladder)...oops.
Not Again!...just kidding, this one's just a nick.
This holly tree ate me up, I'm not sure who got the worst of it me, or the tree. The tree is one of those English Hollies with beautiful Dickens Christmas-Like clusters of bright red holly berries, but the leaves are wicked. Each leaf has 2-3 sharp points.
As a kid, I hated this tree (wow, that's very unFClike, isn't it?).These leaves would fall from the tree and then lie in wait for my bare kid feet. I can remember being about 12 , pulling a leaf out of my heel and announcing, "When I grow up and have a place, I will NEVER plant a holly tree!" I've sort of stuck (hah!) to that, only soft nonsticky holly varieties have made it here.
Please don't lecture me about wearing gloves...I got an earful from the nurse. I know, I know.

Mom with the soft (East Palatka variety) holly we planted earlier at her house.
Both the lady and the young tree are nonspikey.

dpr,
alas, i left my VLL at home for this job...it freaks my parents out.
no, in picture 2, i've taken down the first of the triple trunks and you can see the other trunks better. it did lean naturally towards the garage. that was part of the reason for removal.
the nick sort of took off the outside corner of my pinkie...good circulation i guess :)
yes, she is a sweetie.
I so remember that tree they are brutal.Dad has a few that are big like the one you took down.No doubt your dad and mine planted them about the same time.Memories of Santa Rosa come and go as I visit Mom and Dad all good, neighborhood tag, playing in the big ditches, camping out in the back yard, spending all day at the Sans Sebastian swiming, fishing, shrimping etc. And you know our parents didnt freak out that we were gone all day.It was a cool place to grow up kind of like "Leave it to Beaver"neighborhood
Rick,
Exactly. Lucky, lucky us!
Good job taking that tree down. I typically don't wear gloves when I'm out working in the garden, except when I'm going after the thistle. I find that gloves just interfere, but after seeing your bloody finger, it reminds me why I should be wearing them. I just wish they weren't so clunky.
Nice to see your lovely mom.
Robin,
Some of the new gloves are a pretty nice mix of snug fit and dexterity. Unfortunately, I forgot mine.
Thanks for the mom compliment.
Yow, that may just be a nick, but it looks plumb painful. I am astonished that you had the presence of mind to take a picture of it, rather than running for the bandaids....or perhaps the emergency room.
You have a lovely mom, as of course you already know.
Threecollie,
It hurt a little.
She is a cutie, thanks!
FC,
I finally got on and am getting caught up again.
Cool picture of the spider!
All I had in my cart the other day was Tecate and a lime!
Patterns in nature are everywhere you turn!
Your Mom looks good, tell her hi from me! Oh yea, I usually where gloves!
I posted a boring story about my reunion. No pictures, but I'll probably post some from my Mom and Dad's later this week.
Looks like the holly tree got you good!!! I try to stay away from those spikey trees ... I've never handled a leaf so sharp that it cut me. Youch!

That one was a bleeder, alright. I don't know about you FC, but I'm sometimes the last to know. Someone will look at the back of my leg and go "Eeeewwwwww", and I won't be able to place where the event happened.
BTW - I *always* wear my gloves :-)
That's why I'm taking care of three blisters. RMS in the outdoors.
Must have been nice to have demolished that childhood annoyance. Be glad it wasn't a honey locust! Shrike tree, is what I call it.
ThunderD,
"where gloves" was the problem :)
Ava,
That was the result of a slip, and a gouge by the sharp, broken end of a branch.
Wayne,
Last to know is right. During this job, I looked down at the chipper I was using and it was sprayed with bright red drops...checked myself and sure enough, yet another gaping branch gouge. Sheesh.
Shrike tree...I get it!
FC, tell your Mom and Dad I said hello. I run into them in Wal-Mart now and then and we always have a nice conversation and catch up on the families. I probably won't run into them anytime soon though I'll be home a couple of days this weekend. I'm going to stay away from WM.
When I first moved here (to the West Coast) I'd never seen a real-live holly tree before. I thought of them as festive plants and it never occured to me, until I was hurtling down a huge hill on my rollerblades and desperately searching for something to grab on to in order to break my fall/slow my progress, that "hey, I bet those pointy bits CUT INTO SKIN."
Hey. I never said I was smart.
Kevin,
Hey, I just emailed your new mil address today. Coinkydink or what? Glad you get to go home.
Mrs. S,
Experience is a great teacher...not a painless one, but a great teacher.
Oh, nice bloody finger picture...just what I needed to see!
Your mom looks like someone I would be very privileged to know. :)
Deb,
You just never know what I will think is worth a photo. Thanks for the nice mom comment.
You're a good son and too bad about the ladder and your finger. I never wear gloves although they are always handy...I find them cumbersome. That's a sweet picture of your mom, BYW.
Ok, I am laughing. What else you got?
Abandoned,
I ususally do wear them, but took off for St.Augustine without them this trip...and paid the price :)
Hoss,
Stay tuned.
I'm obviously still having problems mastering the English language! ;-) I'm also having issues uploading photos, so I'll keep trying and let you know when I have some new ones up.
I wanna adopt your Mom! Her face just makes a person (me) feel relaxed.
Thunder,
It's all that German you've been sipping.
Leslie,
She's mine! Thank you for the kindness tho.
