We tried to herd a resistant gopher, bless its heart, off the road the other day. The minute we left, it ambled right back onto the pavement. No grease spot next time we went out, so I reckon it survived, anyhow.
Part of me wishes our kids could experience gopher stew. Oh well, there's always 'cooter'. 8-]
SophieMae, I know what you mean about that last thought. I suppose swamp cabbage is the next thing off the list ... although I never really liked it all that much.
OK, now I'm completely and utterly mortified. I reckon I don't think like most of the world. When I googled cooter, I was reminded how so many people just naturally gravitate toward the gutter. *sigh* For those who might read this and think otherwise... the cooter is a soft-shell turtle.
Great post, FC! Years ago, a friend of ours stopped by our house to show our kids a big gopher turtle that she'd found in the commons area of our neighborhood, which was a large, 3 o4 4 acre spread.
She called someone over at UF and they told her in no uncertain terms to PUT IT BACK. She thought she was doing it a favor by bringing it home to "safety".
When we lived on the lake, hub had warned me not to go near the holes, as rattle snakes liked to roost in them in the cold weather. horrors!
Laura, The list of cohabitants of a gopher tortoise burrow is long and the rattlesnake is on it along with the gopher frog, wolfspiders, indigo snakes, subterranean crickets, ... too many to list!
Regarding the new blogger:So far, except for too many required log ins and some photo posting glitches, I like it.
