No great words of wisdom (hah! as if ...) today. I have exams and exam reviews to create for the little darlings who fill my classroom. There's also this nagging bit of professional development work (NBPTS) that I have put off like a typical student ...
... so here's a few photos from a short hike in San Felasco Hammock State Preserve near Gainesville. It's a gorgeous example of Florida sandhill forest communities and some typical sandy, shallow Florida creeks.
At this point, you could still hear the cars on I-75, but that soon faded away.
Florida sandhill creeks are quiet ... no showy waterfalls or splashy rapids.
Okay, who is this?
A trail of mushrooms beckoned along a fallen log, but alas, I was not 3 inches tall.
I love the sandhill environment. It's hard to come by here, though. Nearly everything is pine plantation. But the new Julington/Durbin preserve is really nice if you get the chance to go there when you're back on the Atlantic side.
ReplyDeleteI had to brave the mall yesterday to shop for Christmas, but I would much rather have been out hiking along this trail instead!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the photographic field trip!
FC, thanks for a beautiful "walk" in the woods. That creek looks like an illustration out of "The Yearling."
ReplyDeleteHurricane Teen, where is that new preserve? When I come back to Northeast Fla next, I hope to check it out.
HTeen,
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check that out when I'm home for Christmas.
Laura,
I did my duty shopping yesterday. Hope yours went well. I actually walked this trail before shopping about a month ago. It's that close to downtown G-ville.
Betsy,
Well, it's about 20 miles away from Cross Creek as the sandhill crane flies...
Betsy - It's between Julington Creek and Durbin Creek in southern Duval County. It can be accessed off the new *choke* Bartram

Park *gag* Boulevard.
Beautiful pictures of the park. I live a hop skip & a jump from
ReplyDeleteI-75...it goes right through our town.
Hey thanks; It was just like being on the walk with you and I so enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI flew right over your neck of the woods today, FC. It's nice to be at "home" again here in Florida.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures of your walk.
Well, see, what you do is scrunch down so you....
ReplyDeleteSandy,MoMadness, Vicki, Hoss,
ReplyDeleteForced to do a blankey thankey due to time, but thanks for your comments!!
