I have started planting the coontie seeds that spill out of the female cones each year. I have the acreage, need more landscape plants, and will retire from teaching someday ... a field of mature coonties at $20 a plant (current price) sounds really good to me.
This is a one year old baby coontie. They DO NOT grow fast in their early years ... at least above ground. The taproot on this baby was so long, I could not get it all in the picture so check out the taproot and ruler photo that goes with this pic.

I love your posts about Florida wildlife and plants. I have my little jungle of sagos, majesty palm and whatever other tropical things will live in a New York living room but I like to learn about the real thing.
I was wondering about coontie when you posted the seeds, but was too lazy to look it up. Now I know....the rest of the story.
Gotta love those natives! We planted some pines when we first moved here. Slow at first, developing those long taproots but took off right nicely after a few years.
Good to see a Floridata link. I love that guy's site. We did a drive-by of his place one day. Really nice.
Re the 'you can call me' line... was Ray Jay before your time or am I just more into 'obscure' than I realized?
I love those kinds of plants like the Coontie...the kind that grow on their own and are native thrivers.
Very interesting posts & good planning for the future.
They take so long to grow that the twenty bucks apiece they cost is worth it.
