Limpkin
I'm not sure why I like Limpkins so much. They are certainly not flashy or colorful.
Something about them makes me smile ... definitely not their call which is other worldly and usually a night time thing.
It freaks me out.
Here's a heavily cropped shot taken from the opposite bank of the Oklawaha River at the Eureka boat ramp. There were 4 or 5 limpkins slurping snails late in the afternoon.
Baby Limpkins are hilariously cute gangly fuzz balls.
I don't have any current (digital) shots of little Limpkins, ... not yet anyway.

You've done a public service - this is the first time I've seen a limpkin, live or in photo. (In camera?) You definitely have to get a baby picture to round out that set.
I understand the attraction; they're definitely cute, in a weird sort of way.
Ok, so what do they taste like?
Just kidding!
Trying to get in the right mind set for my new digs. (that'd be "crib" for your younger readers) ;-)
I just posted about Limpkins a few days ago with pictures of the babies at the park I work at.
I can see why you like them, although it would be hard to describe just why...I guess it's like woodcocks...they are just appealing.
You definitely get to see the coolest looking birds. I'm going to have to check out their sound on the Cornell Birding website. I'll wait until the cat is out of the room, though, I don't want to scare him.
Mooned by a limpkin!
Maybe it's the mystery... the scarcity of sightings. Whatever it is, they are a delight to add to any day's list.
You do have some amazing birds around there. I would give anything to see an ibis or a limpkin around here! They are just dream pictures from that bird book my Grandma (the one who lived on the St. Johns River) gave me before she died.
Got one shot of a Limpkin, right where Mocassin Branch runs under SR 13, wouldn't you know it, it was out of focus! Couldn't even photoshop it, LOL
Thanks for sharing these memories.
Wren,
Good! Mission accomplished. Sounds like Life On The Road has some baby pics up.
Dave,
Why, chicken of course!
Life,
I'll be stopping by to see them!
3C,
I missed a whole flock of timberdoodles at an empty rec park a few weeks ago. Good camo.
Robin,
Good plan, no need to stress the kitty. It's a weird sound.
Sophie,
Probably the scarcity. They are thick around the St.Johns and it's tribs, but I'm not always in their neighborhood.
Deb,
I have more ibis ... adults ... to come. Today was an LGB day though.
Tsyia,
I have lots of fuzzy shots that no one ever sees but me :)
Good luck with your new blog!
Since I'm the smartest person on Earth it's hard to admit that I didn't know "limpkins" existed. I've seen em, of course. Thought they were an ugly variety of Stork.
Jean,
Now that you know about them, your powerful brain is complete.
