Transportational Meditation

When a public school teacher says, "Whew, that was a weird week," you can bet it was as even a normal week in that arena is odd.

Whew, that was a weird week.

Lucky me, I get to ride home through mostly timberland with the option of driving part of the way through a 6000 acre park.
That is my yoga, meditation, ... crystal gazing "ohhhmmmminnnggg" relaxation technique since I am not a hippie ... unlike some of my treasured blog pals.

This pretty little hawk was sitting on a fence post immediately adjacent to the county road earlier in the week. I went past him, U-turned, and went back. As soon as I unzipped the JEEP window, he flew a little farther back into the cypress swamp, but I was able to get one shot off before he swooped out of sight.

"oooohhhhhhmmmmmmm"

Yesterday, the sky was brilliant and I had a get out of jail early pass since I had covered an absent teacher's class during my planning period. Nobody wants to substitute teach anymore, so we wind up doing this alot.
As is my habit when time allows, I cruised into Devil's Hammock for the slow way home. This beautiful hawk was soaking up the afternoon sun, high in a tree.

"Ohhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm"

When I pulled into my driveway, the sun was low and I had to turn around and head out to a basketball (we won!)tourney, so I sadly assumed my photographic day was over. I hopped out of the JEEP and carried the camera and my laptop up to the porch.

"Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

What?

"Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

A young barred owl was sitting in the oak next to the porch just high enough to catch some of the now very slanted afternoon sunlight.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

Um, ... I mean " Ohhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm"

How about that? I saw a barred owl on my way home from work too! Didn't get a picture, though.

We hear barred owls in our backyard sometimes in the early, early pre-dawn morning. Great shot, and what a great drive home. It's as nice as mine.

You are so lucky to have a barred owl right next to your porch. What a fine looking bird. I never see owls, and I always just assumed it's because I'm not a night person, so our paths don't cross. But here you have a pic in daylight. Now I'm wondering why I never see owls. Great photos, fc.

I was NOT going to sit down at the computer today. I was going to stand up while checking the email and cruising maybe two of my favorite blogs before going and doing something, anything that I am supposed to be doing. However, I must comment on your fabulous photos....because they are...simply fabulous. You deserved an avian reward for your rough week. Thanks for sharing.

Deb,
Camera on the front seat?
:)

Valown,
They were cackling like crazy birds in the woods behind me last night.

Robin,
This was very shady. I used a fill flash and the light was going.

roger,
uh huh, i suspected as much :)

3C,
Oops, sorry to distract you from your chores.
Not really.
:)

Tsiya,
Yes. They all would be if I could spend them outdoors!

Misti,
Thanks. Pretty regular sight in our yard from now through the summer.

Sharon,
Thanks!
Ditto!

I can certainly appreciate your comment about having a weird week. You must be reading my mail! :)

It's wonderful that you have such a drive for decompressing after the weirdness that IS so often the school day. For me, it's my walk home surrounded by the silence of snow-covered...everything...that helps me let go of the day and put things into perspective. Recently, I've been accompanied by two ravens who have ventured back early. They make the most amusing sound...something between a cackle and a growl. With no one around, I feel complete freedom to try to immitate them. They don't seem to mind. :)

Hope next week is lower on the weirdness scale...for both of us!!!

Fabulous shots of birds of prey!
You're obviously quick AND steady, and perhaps, using a good telephoto.
Keep 'em coming!

Joe,
Welcome!
I'll drop in as soon as I can. Thanks for the comment!

Kimberlee,
Yes, thank you for adding me. I need to update my bloglist too. So many neat new folks dropping in and I am way behind in updating.
Also behind in visiting. Hope to catch up on that some tomorrow!

Mockinbird,
I'm a stalker.
With a decent camera.
Which I always have with me.
Always.
Can't get the shot without the camera.
Thank you for kind words.

Hello,
I don't know if ou know or not, but is that a coopers hawk? I've seen a few of these hawks but I've never been able to photograph one.

BL,
I think so. I didn't dig out my book to make sure, but that's what I would call it.
