Way to go Charlie.

I listened to an interesting discussion about this on Tell Me More on NPR yesterday. Glad to see that your Governor had the guts to go through with the Veto. Guess he's going to run as an independent in the next election...

FC-
Well "Geez O Pete" I'm over 50 so I can't even see it! As a future Floridian is this something I need to make the font larger and actually read it?

Enlarged it, read all three pages, listened to NPR discussion about it all the way home yesterday- Way to go, Charlie!

In the meantime, Dan's sweetie, an elementary art school teacher got pink slipped yesterday because of her lack of seniority. This despite winning the school board's Teacher of Excellence award for developing and implementing an integrated program that encourages children and teachers to cross disciplines as they teach their subject matter and utilize art and music to demonstrate science, language and history. Ah, me. So little money for all those little growing minds. It will be nice when/if education becomes the priority it should be in this country.

My word verification here today is "commie"- huh! Go figure.

Kelly was happy about this too. She could not see how it helped the students in any way.

Your guv's vetoes are better than my guv's vetoes. My guv would have signed this in a second...of course he hasn't admitted it, but he's running for President...God help us all!

I'm glad to see Crist stand up and do what's right. Good for him and good for our teachers!

Go Charlie! He's got my vote.

He did the right thing this time around. But, he's still slimey.

I have to agree with the last anonymous comment. Can't hardly stand the guy, but even a blind squirrel...

Anyway, I popped over fully expecting to see a bird fight! I figgered it had to be a mocker or kingbird.

Are y'all seeing luna moths? We've seen 7 so far this month! Talk about your population explosion.

Charlie bends whichever way the wind is blowing, so he might not have done it for the right reasons, but at least he did it. I think the legislature underestimated the support for teachers out there -- it not only came from teachers and parents, but from people like me who don't even have a dog in the fight. We all recognize a bad bill when we see one.

Jen,
Yes, he may some party issues now.

Lightnin,
No need, unless you are planning on having more kids or going into teaching.

Vicki,
He did good. That stinks about Dan's very capable sweetie. I hope she gets picked up again.

Kevin,
It was mean spirited and like Kelly said, was not going to assist kids in any way.

Deb,
This guy is a mixed bag, but I fully support this decision.

SandMom,
Me too and I'm glad he basically said back to the drawing board.

Miz S,
Me too! For real.

Anon,
I usually skip anonymous comments, but I did want to say that you can disagree here anytime.
I think I would call him slick, not slimy and definitely a professional politician.
I would reserve "slimy" for John Thrasher who only moved to St. Augustine so he could run for office in that district. Bought a condo.

Sophie,
See above for my opinion on that.
I have not seen a Luna yet, but I rarely do here.
I do have an owl video where something ACTUALLY happens, but Blogger won't let me load any vids lately.

NPR shouldn't exist. Nor should Taxpayer-Paid Democrat-Party-Owned Union bosses. Didn't study the specifics of the bill.

Did you cook the School experiment lobster, yet?

I haven't been paying attention to news or any politics. I surmise from the comments here that Crist did a good thing. Yay!

FC, re the slick v slimy thing... I can't say I totally loathe the guy. I mean he kinda creeps me out. Ever watch him when he's standing behind another speaker? Anyhow, I have to give him a little credit. I was picking up Duller at work one day when he showed up. Someone was just asking me to move my car, coz 'the guvnah is here', when he got out - in a light shower even - and waved them not to bother. At least he isn't completely et up with hisownself.

I'm not a huge fan of Crist, but he made the right move this time—that bill made me think of you, and how you and your students would suffer should it passed. As an educator who has to deal with the final products of No Child Left Behind and other standardized-test -based protocols (my college-level babies) I can say that all that focus on standardized tests is making students dumber, not smarter. My current crop of kids is good at memorizing stuff and figuring out ways to manipulating "the system", but not so good at creative analytical thinking (applying principles and theories learned in class to unfamiliar data and information). They think any situation that requires them to do so is "unfair" because they never imagined they'd have to do this. And my kids are Florida's best and brightest, supposedly tomorrow's great inventors and innovators!

Hopefully, their younger brothers and sisters will be better prepared—or at least, no worse off than they are...

Local teachers here were chomping at the bit on this one too. (He's been a good governor, no? -- He strikes me as being very in tune and engaged).

Troll,
All of NPR? Maybe Prairie Home Companion shouldn't exist, but ALL of it? Something has to be in the middle of the two Idiot Channels, MSNBC and FOX.
Lobster did not happen.

Robin,
He killed a bad bill. It's not that we don't need educational reform, it's just that this bill was horribly flawed.

Sophie,
Wow. That is a rare quality in any politician. LOL!

Felicia,
The FCAT madness is training thousands of students to be really good at filling in scantron forms.
As soon as the private sector comes up with jobs that require that skill, the FCAT will be a success.

Robert,
He is interesting.

I am late to the party. Slimey vs. Slick; Polite vs. Politician. Doesn't really matter to me. What does matter is that we seem to have a group who only care about seeing themselves on TV and making as much money as they can before they retire to become college presidents at schools where students cannot do anything besides take standardized tests and expect handouts. While our state has not been blessed with the greatest politicians over time, they at least used to look to the future. The trust funds that are currently being raided were created to get the cultural institutions that make this a great place to live through such tough economic times as these. Sigh. Sorry, didn't mean to go off here. And while I am glad that the governor doesn't insist on cars being moved to keep him dry, youngest son's recent flight from Miami to Tampa was delayed over an hour while they waited for "a late crew member." Funny, no new stewardess' or pilots got on, but the governor and his entourage did. And only then did the plane take off.
