Amazon Kindle Fire: I Just Drank The Kool Aid

It's an amazingly crisp, cool, fallicious day here at PFHQ today, so this will be a short post.
Right after I click "publish" I'm going out in search of photos and "tales" to share with you.

  • I have a Bear video post coming up, so at some point this week, we can all get our Bear fix.
  • A few minutes ago, I ordered (pre-ordered actually) an Amazon Kindle Fire. I was on the cusp of ordering the Kindle Touch two weeks ago, when I heard the news about an upcoming Kindle announcement, so I waited. I'm glad I did!  I won't get it until mid-November, but when I do, you will get a review here on PF.
  • We were in St. Augustine yesterday for Dad's birthday celebration. He's 83, a polio survivor, and one amazing person, even with the challenges of age and the aftereffects of a vicious virus.
  • The Gators lost to Alabama last night. The house is in mourning ... I tread lightly, not understanding what the big deal is, but knowing better than to say things like, "It's only a game". Once bitten, twice shy.
  • Yesterday, standing in one spot at my parent's suburban house, next to the road, I watched two red shouldered hawks do aerial harassment of a larger red tailed hawk, saw a pileated land on a tree a few feet a way and do it's jungle bird call, AND gasped as a bald eagle soared overhead. ALL during a 15 minute driveway conversation with my brother. What the hell? It was like wild kingdom.
  • The Datil Pepper festival was this weekend in St. Augustine. I didn't make it due to Dad's birthday, but I hear it was fun. Check your calendar this time next year, Pepperheads.
  • Zick, the Pure Florida Kingsnake, shed this week for the first time. Her cast off skin was 52cm long. She is radiant in her rich new skin.
Now, I've rattled on long enough for such a beautiful day.
Time to get out there and find us something.

I eagerly await your view of the Kindle Fire. Beck is thinking of buying one. We are mixed on them. Nice to have access to so much, and our house groans under all the books and yet....there is just something about holding a book in your hand...
Pretty cool bird collection there! In summer I can never read on the sitting porch because of the birds. Just have to look up at every cheep and call. No eagles though

Happy 83rd birthday to your dad! My mom turned 86 last Sunday. You're lucky you got be with him on his day.

I haven't felt drawn to the Kindle yet. Not sure why. I like reading things on the computer (like your blog!), but I can't seem to work up enthusiasm for reading a book on one. I'm be interested in hearing what you think of it.

Great bird sightings!

I bought just the regular kindle and that was plenty for the kind of books that I read because I use it for books that I won't ever read again and don't keep. Less paper around all over the house. I don't want to put a book on it that I would like to keep. So, went cheaper. I think I will save the money for a laptop instead and keep the old kindle. Enjoy it and let us know how you like it.

I'm with threecollie, the feel of a book in hand is irreplaceable.
And I see problems with falling asleep and dropping a kindle on the floor or having a wave short it out at the beach.
But maybe you can show us otherwise?
On the birding front, I have a project for you!
Can you find me some Painted Buntings in your area?
Beautiful Blue,Red and Green guys (the males anyway) amd only a few reported on the Painted Bunting Observer Team website for your area-mostly I think because people aren't looking or reporting.
I'll bet you can find some ;-)

Busy busy. Can't wait to hear about your new toy. Lucky you to still have your Father. I found a snake skin in my garden this summer. :)

It was a little chilly this weekend, but I managed to get the bike out for a few hours! This week is supposed to be fantastic up here too!

3Collie,
I think the adjustment to holding a Kindle instead of a book is made easier by the booklike cases that you can place your Kindle in.
I'll let you know how I handle that adjustment.

Robin,
Happy Birthday to your Mom!
I think for someone like me, who never reads a fictional book more than one time, an E-reader is perfect.

Lisa,
I think it would be plenty for me, but the price difference was close enough that I took the bait!

Myamuh,
I am familiar with them. They come to my parent's feeder in St.Aug.
I have yet to see one over here near Cedar Key, although I know they love wetlands. Is the time right now? I will look.

Librarygirl,
What's that Carol King song... ? ANTICIPATION.

LOL!

Lisa at Greenbow,
Yes, I feel lucky everytime I talk to him. I love finding snakeskins.

Thanks Shell Lady!
I will check it out.

Dave,
Great! There is a perfect balance of cool air and warm sun right now around here. 51 this morning.
