DEER Gawd, THAT Did NOT Just Happen!

True Tale ...

Junior, my baby boy,is starting at UF this summer as a transfer student from Santa Fe College. Last week was an orientation to UF day, so we were on the phone taking care of a few items of business. When that was over, he said, "Dad, you will not believe what happened to me today."

His tale went something like this ...

" I was driving down a semi-rural road in Gainesville when I saw a deer with his head caught in a fence. I pulled over to the road shoulder, got out, and went to the deer. He had his head through the fencing and was tightly wedged. It would have been easy to release him if I had wire cutters with me, but I didn't, so I got busy trying to untangle the struggling deer."

"The deer was freaking out and working against me out of fear, but I kept at for about 20 minutes in the 90 degree mid-day heat. All this time, nobody stopped to help me untangle the deer, but I didn't give up."

"Finally, the deer popped free! I stepped back and watched him run down the roadside ditch parallel to the fence. I was feeling pretty good about the rescue. As I watched, the deer came to the end of the fence line and made a sharp turn ... not into the woods, but on to the roadway ...
... where it was immediately struck and killed by a big pickup truck."

What are the odds?
The only fatherly advice I could give him is, "YOU made the right decision" in stopping to rescue the deer.

It's not your fault if the deer made the wrong decision.

Sounds like that deer had a serious case of bad CARma.

In other news, we are awaiting some much needed rain from Tropical Storm Beryl. So far, conditions are very mild with only a light breeze and a little rain here and there.

About 20 inches would be nice, but our prediction is for 2 to 3.

We'll take every drop, thank you very much.

Ouch. That sucks.

The only other advice I could offer is that sometimes, when life hands you lemons they can sometimes be used to make not only lemonade but also a rather nice venison chilli.

Poor deer! He was so confused with fear. You did what you could do.

Aw, what a miserable thing to have happen to him. Life's like that sometimes I guess, but what a shame.
Believe it or not the word verification is virtue groover. Must be talking about Junior.

Tai,
Well, chili IS comfort food after all.

Kimberly,
True, he did the right thing.

3C,
Definitely an odd twist. The good news is there are two spotted fawns spending their days in our back half here at PFHQ, so more deer are on the way.
Virtue groover is a pretty groovy tag.

I love what Junior did. It was the right and humane thing. It's just too sad that the deer ended up getting hit by the truck. How tragic. But the Junior part of the story is absolutely great.

You raised a great son. I'm sorry it ended with the deers death. Give Jr a hug for me.

Oh the irony.

And, I would be more than happy to send you some of my rain. Read my blog post.

Didn't you have a very similar incident with a vulture?? or something like that??
At least Jr. tried; that's all you can do sometimes.

And I must say, if I had to choose between dying instantly by getting run over by a truck and dying of dehydration in the heat... I'd choose the truck!

Looks like ya'll are getting drenched up there today. Good for ya!! We've only had one good day of rain in the last two months in Apollo Beach, just south of Tampa.

Oh, MAN! That's just bizarre. Poor deer. Good on ya, Junior. You did your best.

Also, I am totally not kidding about this: one of my verification words is "scrotum." HA!
