Here at PureFlorida HeadQuarters, we love our resident Gopher Tortoises.
We worry about them too...
These gentle animals are having a rough time hanging on in Florida due to the loss of habitat caused by development.
This week, they were on my mind so I took a focused walk around our property to count active gopher tortoise burrows. I'm happy to share the highlights of this tortoise survey and pleased to report that we have 9, maybe 10 known active burrows.
Lastly, we don't just protect our resident gophers. We give them space, manage the areas around their burrows to enhance their grazing opportunities, and even plant known gopher food plants close to their homes.
Mostly, we don't see the actual gophers,... just their burrows and sometimes their poo. (Which does not stink by the way).
When we do find one out grazing, we stop and watch, pinch ourselves for being so blessed, and go about our business without interfering in theirs.
