This is the spadefoot toad that I dug up. AMAZING EYES on this toad! Those eyes and the yellow color make these easy to tell apart from our common toads. Spadefoots spend a lot of time underground. The toads hopping along your walkways at night are common toads which spend a lot more time "out and about". If you're not drenching your yard in pesticides and herbicides, it's probably supporting a whole host of creatures that you may never see due to their secretive, nocturnal habits. Still, it's nice to know they're out there.
