Frozen Key Lime Pie ?

One of my favorite bloggers mentioned that frozen key lime pie was a favorite snack. Hmmm...frozen key lime pie?

Key limes are different from regular limes. They are tarter and very small, a lot smaller than regular limes. The tree is very cold sensitive and doesn't survive the winters where I am, so even in Pure Florida land I have to buy the limes or the juice.

The great thing about fresh key lime pie, besides that it's fresh, is it's ease of construction.

It's a real man's pie...doesn't take much skill to make it.

Here's what you need:
1 graham cracker pie crust
3 egg yolks...(Pablo, I know there's 4 in the picture, I like to pump it up)
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup of Nellie and Joes Key West Lime Juice
Some whip cream (not pictured) Squirty kind works fine.

Do this:
Dump egg yolks, lime juice, and milk into a mixing bowl.
Mix.
Dump greenish goo into pie shell.
Bake 15 minutes at 350 F.
Chill.
Squirt whipped cream on pie.
Eat.

Not as simple as the frozen version, but almost... Posted by Picasa

For some reason I am always surprised to see that Key Lime Pie is not green...growing up in the Jello generation will do that to you.

I like the finished pie. Was it good?

Nope...not green. Unless the local chain pie shop chooses to dump green food coloring into the mix. Yummy, yummy, yummy.

I can get key limes at the local produce market, but the last time I squeezed, by hand, about 40 limes to get enough juice. I gave up and started buying that bottle juice.

The only other perfect end to a meal is pecan pie, and sometimes sweet potato pecan pie.

Looks fabulous Cracker.

FC,
Just thought I'd let you know I'm baaaack! The recipe sounds good, I'll have to try it out. I do agree with Zanne, sometimes the bottled stuff is a better choice! Hey, I did want to let you know that I responed to your comments on my site and that I'll hopefully post something new this weekend.

FC, why have you done this to me? All I need is another toothsome treat that is relatively easy to prepare to fill the emotional voids in my life!

(But I will give it a try. Perhaps this weekend.)

Hick,
A green key lime pie is a sure sign of adulteration with food coloring...or worse Jello products. Yes, it was good...great desert with coffee. I would have had 2 pieces, but my key lime sniffing daughters found it.

Zanne,
As southern as I am I just never got pecan pie. I do like sweet potato pie because it tastes like pumpkin pie which I love.

ThunderD,
I'll check Thunder and Lightning out tonight when I get home.

Pablo,
It is the way of things...someday you will be like a tree returning to the forest. You must fill in the in between time with goodies.
Pretty good huh...I learned that at RoundRock.

Hey that looks easy enough for me to make! Assuming I can find Key Lime juice...

Looks tasty.

Rurality,
I like to cook, but not bake, so if I can do it... :)

Thing,
Sorry, I'll play nice. Actually, I have known the pleasure of a still frozen, frozen chocolate cake. Who can wait for them to defrost?

A Southern cookin' man! I may be gay but I just LOVE Southern guys, they're so great. Love your site, Cracker. Hooked into it from Tommy's site. Thanks for the recipe!

Sandy,
Welcome to Pure Florida! Thanks for the nice comment. This pie is too good and too easy to not make often. Enjoy!
