The Next Time You Feel Like Drinking Out Of A Stream...

Posted by Picasa

This was around one of the many bends in a slough connected to a clear flowing spring fed stream called the Waccasassa River. Curiously, the native word, "Waccasassa", means place of cows. The water around the cow drains into that same stream.

There are cows grazing in the piney woods nearby and it looked like this one stepped into some mud that was just too soft.

And you thought giardia was all you had to worry about.

I remember hiking in the Blue Ridge and coming across a wall if trickling water where a tin cup sat on a tiny outcropping. "It's for the hikers," my friend said, "This water is so good to drink."
I'm glad we don't do that here...

Nice visual reminder of why drinking out of streams is not such a good idea. We never do. I have wondered what it was like though, when you could cup your hands and take a sip of water in a moving river, creak, or stream without worry. Even though cows met similar fates then, it still must have been great upstream.

Hick,
Don't worry. When the menu says "steaks aged to perfection" they probably don't mean this far along...

Sin,
In the Smokies, I ate the snow off the branches, but that was it. Too many hikers cruising along the same paths. Thanks for stopping by.

RD,
I know, it's always tempting and certainly I slurp some while swimming, but I can't remember any bad effects. my ignorance was bliss, but it can't be recaptured.

As I fight my way through the sloughs of the Ogeeccee River I have wondered what would happen if I too got stuck in the muck.Especially when the river is rising.

I need to spell better.
Ogeechee River

Rick,
Years ago, I remember a story in the Times Union about a clammer who had gotten stuck in the mud and drowned when the tide came in...be careful.
