I think this guy might be a mud snake, but I haven't put much energy into identifying him. He was perched above the chilly marsh water in a sunny spot and did not move as I slipped up in the canoe.
The entire freshwater marsh here is browning and the cattail leaves will soon add a new supply of detritus to the marshy bottom.

That's not a snake we have around here...I can see Treebeard and I will have to venture down to FL and check out a marsh or two.
