Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary. How Does YOUR Garden Grow?

Wednesday Puzzler: See that tendril reaching for the stake? Name that tropism!

Garden Update:
About 2 weeks ago, I broadcast planted spinach, carrots, green ice leaf lettuce, blackseeded simpson leaf lettuce, and a mesclun mix. I quit planting neat rows of salad greens years ago when I read Dick Raymond's books on wide row gardening. I like the idea of planting thick and thinning by eating. He also suggests mowing salad greens with a pair of scissors rather than picking leaves. That seems to work great.

Those salad greens are up and about 4-5 inches high. They could actually take a first shearing now, but I will let them grow a little more. Lettuce this late in the garden season is a gamble since early hot days will cause the lettuce to produce that horrid bitter white sap and then bolt.

I also planted collard green starts, one of those 9 pack thingies. They are ready for a first picking and I only lost one plant to a critter.

The snow peas are up, bigger than the week old picture above. They are a winter - spring crop here and won't stand for heat. I like to eat them right off the vine.

Two days ago, I planted 9 Better Boy tomato plants in large black pots filled with last years composted pig manure and some commercial Miracle Grow potting mix.. (Oh the horror, FC is not completely organic! Click away, click away!)

In additional pots of the same mixture, I planted 9 bell pepper plants...I forgot the variety, but it's CA Wonder I think.

In the vacant pig pen, I made some wide rows and planted a yellow crookneck squash for my honey. ( I have no use for any squash) I also planted some Crimson Sweet water melon.

Today, is the fair livestock auction and the last day I will see our two FFA pigs. Just before the auction, I will take them each one last banana, pat them on their heads, and say goodbye. I do this every year and don't look back.

I'll post an update later, probably this evening...one last flurry of fair pics and what the kids earned at the auction. Posted by Picasa

Give those pigs a "howdy-hey" for me.

Thanks for the garden update, now I'm sufficiently depressed. There's frost this morning in Illinois. Yeah, I know, that's what I get.

I sure miss growing snow peas. it's too hot for them here. WHen the girls were little, we'd pick them off the vine and eat them right in the garden... sooo good!
Your "24 carrot" garden will just thrive with all the manure you have at your disposal. Will we get to see pictures of the produce?

Yesterday it was gravitropism, today you're on to the myth of phototropism- or is it heliotropism, you're looking for?
But, do I have this right? Phototropism takes place mostly under cover of dark and so what you really are observing, in the sunlight, is that part of the plant that has grown the most- the side that gets the least sun? As usual, I have some confused piece of random info floating around in there.

But say! Those are swell looking little peas! We're still a ways off from planting here (uh, a month at least, on lettuce, etc.) I'll be in Florida next week- think I could get a good crop up in 5 days?

Good luck with the piggies.

ah, can I stay all day correcting mistakes on my paper? Thought I could switch photosynthesis for phototropism under cover of comment darkness- didn't work. Sorry for the clutter.

Boy...everyone is slipping and sliding to work this morning 'cause of the ice...all that snow got slushy yesterday and then froze overnight. And you have a gardening post...sheesh...

My garden is waiting for me to finish doing all the taxes, so we can see whether we have any $ left over to buy the mega-truckloads of dirt we need to fix it up...

sweet peas or edible peas?

Zanne,
Hey, at least you have real soil with humus under that snow!

Laura,
Produce pictures? If I can beat the deer.

Vicki,
It's okay.
It's okay.
See, happens to the best of us.
I was thinking of a different tropism...

Hick,
I have ice in the freezer, does that count?

DPR,
I reread my post and I meant to say that I don't space out plants in narrow traditional rows. I actually do have beds and wide rows, I just scatter plant instead of carefully spacing and thinning. I just thought it was funny that we both did a similar post today.

Rurality,
It's all that soap you have stored there. No dirt would dare show it's face.

TaraDharma,
It's an edible pod snowpea type...Alaska I think.

Snow peas - grew them too and ate them off the vine too - not many made it to the house to cook.

I will have to post some pictures of my garden I did wide beds with posts - by the time I piled every thing I could find in them in a few years I had nice compost and dirt instead of sand.

I tried to "Click away! Click away!" but I was *rooted* to the spot. Boo, Hiss.

Not only am I shocked at the Miracle Grow, but you planted HYBRIDS!

Hmm. Jealousy is an ugly thing, isn't it? Still about 3 or 4 weeks until average last frost date here. Had sleet this morning.

Doubleknot,
It's tough to turn this FL sand into soil...and then after you do, heavy rains leach away all your work.

Leslie,
LOL! I am an evil, semi-organic, hybrid planting gardener. No pesticides at all though...does that help?
