Why I'm Afraid To Go Outside

Well, we're trapped inside today. The alien pups from Sirius have landed ...again. They've posted two guards with that alien-doggy laser- vision thingie at the front door. We have been instructed to stay inside.

When you're under house arrest by alien dogs, you tend to have science fiction on your mind...the two seem to go together somehow. All of this close encounter stuff got me thinking about my list of really bad, really fun to watch scifi movies.

My list:

A Boy And His Dog
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Gorgo
The Stuff
Monster In The Closet
The Toxic Avenger
Any of the old, out of lipsynch Japanese Godzillas
Any 50's era, giant bug, bird, or octopus movie.

What would you add?

UPDATE SUNDAY MORNING: THANKS COMMENTERS, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE POSTS WHERE THE COMMENTS ARE BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL POST. LOVED THE INPUT! Posted by Picasa

Definetly "Mars Invades"!

I can't think of a single one. I rarely watch sci-fi movies unless hub has turned them on. LOL!

What a friendly looking alien at the front door. ;)

As a pup, I worked as a movie theater usher through high school. I think the movie Zardoz was imprinted on my mind then. If the image of Sean Connery in a loin cloth does not put you off, you migh consider watching it to see its curious connection to Kansas.

Also, did you ever see Sunshine State?

Ooh, ooh!
Return of the Living Dead
and especially...
Night of the Comet

Well, my favorite is the 1957 The Invasion of the Saucer Men wherein teenagers battle aliens who have claws that inject ethanol and detachable hands that crawl around and (should I give away a spoiler?) can be exploded by light. Cool. It also goes by at least a half-dozen other titles.

That one is funny-bad. Insulting bad is the horrible Nightfall perverted to unrecognizable extremes from Isaac Asimov's classic story.

Then there's the ones that are classic, but have embarrassingly funny parts: Forbidden Planet, wherein one of our intrepid crewmen takes a deep breath of the atmosphere and announces - There's oxygen here!

That one also falls into the category of dated, whereby ordinary scenes simply don't work anymore.

And then there's the deliberately bad - I love Dark Star. The alien beachball with claws, the petulant bomb. Count on John Carpenter for this and others.

Thank goodness someone mentioned Mars Invades, which falls into that category. I was thoroughly entertained.

I'm not sure where A Boy and his Dog fits, but I love that one too.

Now I'm thinking of more and more, but I'll stop here.

Oh - and very funny! Zardoz, as Pablo says, is so tendentiously funny as to be unbelievable, and the Kansas connection is as well. How wonderful that Sean Connery got caught up in that one.

Oh yes, and the very first one that occurred to me - the definitely not bad classic but still with dated manipulative characters and scenes and dialog: Robinson Crusoe on Mars!! In which one gets a very daring ( for 1964 ) view of the backside of Paul Mantee.

"The Blob", it creaps & leaps and glides across the floor and thru the doors...

"The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (I think I have just, given away my age here).

The Crawling Eye- "The nightmare terror of the slithering eye that unleashed agonizing horror on a screaming world!"
The Thing- "No One In This World Can Match The Menace Of "The Thing"

Not in this bad sci fi category, but really great sci fi and two of my all-time favorites:
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)

I can't remember: Did "Revolt of the Triffids" ever make it as a movie?

Jax Public Library has a series called 50 Science Fiction Films From The 50s! They're so terrible that they're terrible. My wife and I are in the process of watching all 50; our latest was Teenagers From Space and it's one of the best of the lot.

I love "Mars Attacks!" - they have so many Sci Fi cliches' in there, it's a hoot.

The Amazing Colossal Man is unforgettable. Maybe it was seeing a giant bald guy in a loin cloth, mabye it was the grossly oversized hypodermic, but the movie kind of sticks in your brain.

Your list of movies covers a lot of my favorites - A Boy and his Dog needs to come around again on DVD. Used to have all of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movies - did you know there was more then one?
I tried to check your blog but I got a forbbiden access message - well I thought maybe I said something to affend you and you blocked me.
The blogger people said they had been having trouble with that. Also people have had trouble making comments on my blog.
Any way real cool dogs.

First, as you have probably figured out, Blogger had some problems today. I'd love to rant, but this is a free product and I try not to forget that. Sure was good to be able to see PF and your comments tho. Whew!

Reading your comments made me realize how many good bad movies I had left off, I really appreciate the memory jog.

Pablo,
I love Zardoz, just forgot about it.

Rurality,
Two good ones. I love the Living Dead style flesh munching zombie type movie.

Laura,
Another similarity, I love SciFi, she does not.

Wayne,
I almost listed Forbidden Planet, but it's not campy bad. I probably should have kept A Boy And His Dog in a higher quality list also. I might have added Tremors also...Burt the gun nut is my hero.

Abandoned,
My uncle was an extra in Creature From The Black Lagoon.

DPR,
True, true.

RD,
Those are good bad choices and I agree the bottom two are actual good sci fi classics.

Leslie,
Good choices. Attack of The 50 Foot Woman was a good one too.

Hick,...yes, you in the front row with your hand up. Great choices. Original Thing or remade Thing?

Hoss,
I think it was called Triffids vs Roundup.

John,
What a great assemblage of movies. I would watch them all too.

Thing,
People in Naples must be dropping like flies. Glad to see you had some time to blog. Good choices! I have seen the shrew one and would possibly throw in The Alligator People and The Giant Leeches also.

Doubleknot,
Just a blogger glitch, nothing personal :) I knew there were other killer tomato movies, but have only seen the first one.

Lets hear it for bloger. Your site was "forbidden" for most of the day. No one mentioned "The Frogs" which was filmed in Florida. It's got to be close to the top of the list.
Speaking of movies they used to film a lot of the Tarzan movies on Weedons Island in St. Pete. This was, of course, after the local indians had given up having their little battles there.

Mac,
I saw Frogs in the Matanzas theater (long gone) in St. Augustine as a teen. How could I forget that one! Good choice.

threecollie said...

I too love Tremors, with special emphasis on Burt.
He is really my hero. I so want a cannon to park at the top of the driveway and he HAS one already, the bum.

R.Powers said...

Threecollie,
Right! A cannon and an underground safe room / arsenal...heaven.

(I probably just scared away a bunch of readers...oops!)

I'm not a sci-fi aficionada, but how much is that doggie in the window?

Karen Schmautz said...

The Thing. Old one great...new one pretty scary.

I couldn't post yesterday and I'm having a "time" posting today...but it is free. Sigh.

Bonnie,
Well, so far he's cost me a bundle in heartworm pills, an operation, dogfood, etc. Good thing he's so loveable.

Hick,
Ahh yes...James Arness. I liked em both.
