I Know I Should Know This.

?

I found this in San Felasco Hammock last week. It's a new plant to me, so I flipped through my wildflower book, but could not ID it.

The light was going and it was starting to rain when I took the photo. If I hadn't been rushing off the trail, I might have noticed, (and looked inside) those rolled leaves.

I only noticed them once the pic was up on the 'puter.

Wow, that's gorgeous! Love most of your nature pics (not the dead animal ones.) And speaking of nature, on top of that ice storm we got yesterday, now we're under another winter storm advisory today through 6 a.m. Friday, with the potential for a foot of snow. Man, no pun intended, but when it rains it pours! The roads could have been cleaned a lot better this a.m. than they were but KC is not exactly known for its great road cleaning in the winter. I'm getting out of here early today; the drive last night was really nasty. Thanks for your good wishes. Hope you are having lovely weather there!!

Strawberry bush, hearts-a-bursting, Euonymus americana, whatever you want to call it this is absolutely one of my favorites.

Ours get cropped practically to the ground by the deer, but when I put in the e-fence the ones inside started growing rapidly and a couple years later put out their first fruits.

When I first came across these, many years ago, they struck me as so bizarre that I thought they couldn't be native. But they are!

Good catch, FC!

The bush of many names! It's also called Wahoo bush, which is supposedly an Indian name, but I tend to doubt that.

My hearts abursting with gratitude for the plant help.

Gin,
Thanks and welcome to Pure Florida!

roger,
i'm thinking there's caterpillars in there. i've seen this on my cannas. i wish i had thought to get under and shoot up. sorry!

MoMadness,
Be careful, the weather channel made it sound treacherous up there. It's 72 here this evening.

Wayne,
I wish this was on my property. I can see why it's a favorite, it's beautiful.
I can't believe I've never encountered it before ... I do get out a bit. Thanks for the ID info.

Rurality,
As in, "Wahoo! My hearts-a-burstin!"
Well, it might have happened that way.

It looks like a lovely reddish/pink seed pod to me and Hearts-a-bursting sounds like a very fitting name.

Sandy,
I wish I'd grabbed a seed.

Cool plant, ain't it?! Here's one of my favourite sites for researching FL natives:

If you search for just Euonymus, you'll find three varieties.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been here quite awhile, but I tend to lurk and only post if I know something. Guess that shows how little I know. :)
