There she is, unnamed, but adjusting to her new home.
This morning, Junior and I loaded up the trailer and drove north to the farming community of Mayo to fetch his new young show pig. Our livestock fair is in March, so between now and then we'll need to grow this pig to at least 230 pounds, but not more than 280 pounds to be eligible for entry.
The ride to Mayo was a beautiful one through farms, ranches, and woodlands under a blue fall sky. It's a ride I'd like to take again without a schedule.
At the pig farm, we waited in line with other show pig buyers until it was our turn to get our pig. We had to wear cool plastic booties over our shoes so we didn't track in pig germs.
Lucky us, Junior is pals with the young man selling the pigs and he had previously picked "a good one" out for us.
She's a beaut with that long muscular body that the swine judges appreciate. We just need to take good care of her and enjoy the next 3 months with her.
She seemed to settle in quickly. When I checked on her, a few minutes ago with a flashlight, she was sound asleep in a fluffy pile of hay.
Junior is still undecided about what to name her.
I suggested Newton.
He giggled,but was noncomittal.
Feel free to make your own name suggestions and I will share them with him.
Just remember, I'm out of the loop on this one. He will be the one who decides.

Harley because she appears to have a tattoo on her butt.
Patch. She appears to be a wonderful pig! I always enjoy your pigs.

I have a friend who lived near some swamps and had a dog he named "gator bait", guess what?
In that spirit how about
"Breakfast"?
Some pig! I love the spotted ones you folks raise. Ours are plain pinky-white.
Our three this year are named Huey, Dewey and Lewie. Lewie is an escape artist and took the other two down to the state highway this week. Glad I wasn't around for that debacle.
How 'bout Hermione?
uh oh, she's a little too cute.
I have no more creative name than any of the other geniuses above.
Cathy S,
Is that a requirement for Harley ownership?
LOL! I love that name.
Vicki,
THERE you are!
I was beginning to wonder about you.
Excellent poem!
Lesle,
Fitting for a southern girl!
Pablo,
Good choice with a nice connection to history.
Blooger is a fussy girl sometimes.
Scott,
It has possibilities ... I'm chewing on a ham biscuit right now.
3C,
Uh oh! Our previous pigs escaped once while we were away overnight and wound up in pig jail. Lucky for us we got them back.
I like that name :)
HT,
She's got the cute thing going on.
Lucy Stywalker? My brain isn't entirely awake yet... trying to think of a New Pork Richey kinda handle. Nicole Pork Richey? Maybe a temporary JUICY tattoo across the patch.
I should go back to bed and try again later. I need some sunshine to boost my energy. Love the rain, when it happens, but the dreariness is draining.
Sophie,
You're getting rain??
I like your clever names!
Link?
You can't go wrong with royalty.
Lady Phoebe Snoutington-Styworthy, Countess of Ham-On-Rye Castle in County Mayo-Or-Mustard.
Phebes for short.
Babette, if she's always feasting.
Don't let us get too attached to her. I'm still recovering from reading Charlotte's Web as a child.
No rain today, just a dreary morning... had a tad earlier in the week. One day, it was hard enough, I thought it might actually make a difference, but alas, 'twas short-lived.
Parche spanish for patch
Mármol spanish for marble
Kmoo,
Chop?
Artful,
Wow. A title!
Wren,
I know what you mean. I always get too attached to these show pigs, but for the next 4 months, she will live like royalty ... pig royalty that is.
Sophie,
Dry here too and now the cold is returning so that means more dry I suppose.
SmilinB,
Now that has music in it.
Hey, thank you for the amazing snake photos. Beautiful!
artfulsub suggested royalty, which was my first idea. we like wrong-species names [like fido or spot for cats], so what about elsie or bessie? although frankly, this pig has timeless style; maybe katherine hepburn is the correct name for her.
completely off-topic -- there is a possibility that my daughter's U may face off against USF in the sun bowl. if so, i hope your marching band is ready. [i care not about the football part of the proceedings!]
Kathy A,
Cool! I'll root for your band and our football team.
It'll be even steven.
Hepburn ... yes ... or Rita Hayworth.
Laughing at all the pig names. We have friends who have two pigs, Bacon and Sausage.
Oh, in answer to your question, I think it is a requirement for Harley ownership, therefore, we have only Japanese made bikes!
Cathy S,
LOL!
She's adorable :) I think she looks like a "Belle" :)
Actually Pure Florida I owe you. I started taking tons of pictures again. I got jealous of the quality of yours. So far I opened a flckr account and have been snapping pictures ever since.
Sharon,
If it were Emma's pig, that would be a first choice. She still loves Beauty and the Beast.
SmilinB,
Keep shooting. Those snakes are amazing.
Miss Bacon.
"daisy" is a nice old fashion name for a pig. mine was called "pinky"
Scott,
What a ham.
Bluebird,
Both would fit this cute pig :)
