That looks like coquina shell in the background...salt crystals?

Looks like iron pyrite (fool's gold) mixed in with some other crystals, quartz maybe?

Your Cajun chicken looks too yummy!

Ok FC, I'm going out on limb here...I think it's a really close up shot of the back of one of those mating horseshoe crabs partially buried in the sand? Probably not, but you have to admit a very original guess!

it looks a lot like that experiment where you dissolve sugar in hot water, then let it turn into rock candy on strings via the wonders of evaporation.

but i'll go along with some kind of other [quarts?] crystal formation, laced with fool's gold.

Hmmm . . . there's something about those parallel striations that has me thinking of something organic.
