Sick Puppy

It turns out the "free" puppy, sweet Gumbo, came preloaded with hookworms and a raging clostridium infection.
It was touch and go yesterday, and last night, but after worm pills, an antibiotic, Nutri-Cal supplement gel, Gatorade, and tons of TLC ... there are definite signs of improvement this morning.

Please keep Gumbo in your heart and thoughts today.

He's not out of the woods yet.

Aww, poor baby! I hope the other dogs don't pick it up also.
Hang in there!

One of our pups came pre-packaged with worms. We got it cleared up in short order. I hope you have the same luck.

Man, what a bummer. I didn't get a chance to comment on your earlier puppy posts, and now this happens. I sure hope he gets the chance to become a senior citizen of House o' FC.

Jeez! I thought worms were part of being a pup... never knew it could be as serious as that. I hope he'll be okay.

Oh, that face is just killing me. Poor baby. Give him a snuggle for me. I hope that tomorrow's post will report that he's happily running around pestering the other dogs.

my experiences with wormers (and od'ing my one mix- he survived) leads me to warn. Even though i bet you already know all this. Ivomec is the one wormer that works wonders on eradicating all this stuff. But for some reason the collie and shepard breeds seem to have serious deadly issues with it. When you get a dog (with unknown parentage and not papered) there is now a test you can take on the dog to see if he is susceptible. cool eh?

Have to mention it whenever we talk about doggies...

oh there is a product called nutri-drench. very high in iron and stuff. whenever i see an animal losing ground. dehydrated. very anemic etc. high worm load. i use that (its made for goats) but any of those products red cell etc really can infuse some energy back into them to help fight this onslaught...

now how do you bottle that puppy breath?

You know those eyes are just tellin ya that he trusts you to make him better and that he will be good forevr and ever and ever.
Please, daddy make me feel better, I don't know what's happening to me.

He will be healthy and strong. That is simply the way it's meant to be.

Uh, oh. Having been that route with a Rotti pup (who survived to be a very people loving dog due as a result of all her coddling), I know how stressful this has been. Praying for his quick recovery. I know you will give him the best care possible.

I had to catch up on my reading to find out more about Gumbo. Poor little fella! I bet he'll be just fine...

I'm happy and glad you took both pups that day. That's super! How are Feather and Flounder getting along with them? Have they taken a dip in that labby-waterfolly yet?

Thank you all for your good wishes and prayers.
Gumbo showed improvement this morning, but is still feeling poorly.
He went along with Feather for her annual check up and the Doctor was pretty thrilled with Gumbo's progress. (Feather was great too)

He's eating and drinking again, but still sensitive about being bumped (his abdomen was so sore yesterday).
Bear pup is being wonderfully considerate of his little brother but occasionally still forgets and tries to wrestle him.

I am filling in for Gumbo as Bear's wrestling partner.
In fact, he's looking at me right now with a come and get me look so ... I gotta go puppy wrestle.

Thanks again for your kindness.

I think it was no coincidence that Gumbo found such a loving, caring family who will do anything to care for him. Sending well puppy thoughts your way.

Prayers are with little Gumbo... so glad this pup is surrounded by a caring family of animal lovers!

Reminds me of the time we got our first miniature poodle. She had been tied up a balcony in Panama, with people coming and going, but never giving her any attention. I went over and offered to walk her every day after school.
My husband ended up buying her for me and she was loaded with worms, etc. After many trips to Vet, Topsy
went on to have one large puppy named Muffin. Mother and Daughter were two spoiled dogs, just like the lucky canines at PFHQ.

A "free" dog. That's funny!

I'm late to it, and happy to hear that Gumbo is on the mend.

What do the older dogs think of the interloper?
