Out At Shell Mound As Fay Fades

Sunday morning and I can see the first patches of blue sky and bright sunshine since last Wednesday.
Weaker, but still wet, Fay has moved on to be somebody else's news, adventure, ... perhaps tragedy.
It is what it is.

Yesterday, while it was still Fayish around here, Mrs. FC and I rode out to Shell Mound. The mound is an ancient shell midden overlooking broad marshes, islands, and the Gulf itself. It's part of our National Wildlife Refuge System.

This is the road in. The forested 6,000 year old shell midden is up ahead and around a bend so you can't see it in this shot.

Can you tell the wind is whooshing the spartina marsh grass in this still pic?
I did shoot some video of the windy palms and grass, a marsh hen, and a willet, but they haven't made it to Youtube yet.
Each is about 20 -30 seconds long which translates into about 2 hours of upload time for the 3 clips on dial up.

Misty rain would spring up from time to time. Not enough to run for cover and it was normally of short duration.
This young laughing gull was hunkered down on the marshy shore, resting until the steady southwest winds of Fays arse finally moved on. Out on a nearby sandbar were willets, skimmers, pelicans, gulls, and terns doing the same.

Here's an elusive little bird, a clapper rail, or as we call them down here, a "marsh hen".

I love their clackitty call sliding over a stormy marsh ... it always sounds like home to me.

I love when storms roll through, such contrast to our sunny days.

Love that shot of the gull. Sure wish some of that rain would pay us a visit.

That Fay was quite a storm. It's hard to imagine that it's still got energy after all this time.

Love that marsh hen. The lighting is beautiful in that shot.

Beautiful photos... especially the birds!

One day I'll bite the bullet and buy a stronger zoom.

Coolness. Am diggin' the road in! That just begs you to keep going, doesn't it?

You might want to do a Poll of readers to see how many prefer your videos to your stills. Especially since you have Flintstone Internet and it takes you a LONG time to post videos.

I prefer the pics.

Cool. I've never been to a shell midden. The shots at the midden are beautiful. You can see the motion in all of them. The clapper rail is gorgeous!

Dani,
Me too. It's a nice change.

Swampy,
It's bound to get there ... who comes after Fay?

Robin,
I had to fill it with flash due to the grey skies and flitty hen. I never would have got a focused shot otherwise.

Susan,
Me too on the zoom ... you can never have enough!
Glad you liked it.

Freste,
It does urge you in and if you meet someone coming out, you or they need to pull over to pass by each other.

Troll,
Is this a Troll Poll here at PFHQ?
I prefer stills too since all my digital video is handheld and taken with my Sony which is a still camera first.
If this were a real VideoBlog, I would only shoot with real video camera and tripod.
I look at the video snippets as optional glimpses of what I saw and HEARD ... that's why I only put them here as a link and do not make you sit through a loading process ... unless you choose to do so.
Having said that, I think your poll suggestion is a good one so let's see what the people say.

Kathleen,
Around the state, alot of these wound up as construction material in the early 1900's, but there are some spectacular ones preserved.

We visited that midden years ago. It's a beautiful place! It's a shame that more weren't preserved while the carpetbaggers were burying Florida in concrete.

Love the bird photos!

Is Florida going to be Florida again?

What a great set of photos!! You can just feel a little bit of autumn sweeping in on the heels of the storm. And you really did capture the way the wind was hitting the grass, which I have tried and failed to do myself. Nice birds too

Hoss,
If you mean sunny, then we are back to normal!
:)

3C,
Thanks! It was easy to imagine fall on such a blustery day, but the temps were most unfallish.
