Here's something I found at the base of the blazing stars that were featured in the Gulf Between Us post of a few days ago.
What could this be?
Reminds me of the mud drip sand castles I made as a kid (okay, yes, I still make them) on the beach at St. Augustine.

mudbug?
Looks like mud piles crawfish make here.
I don't know but I have some in my yard, sometimes. I try not to mess with whatever it is. Educate me, that's your job.
Reminds me of the ground wasp nests that pop up in my Florida yard. Could be the beneficial kind or could be madder than a hornet. Probably depends upon your karma, Mr. FC.
looks like a durtdobber gone a little crazy making his home.
Mud drip sand castles, mud pies made from real dirt, I'm glad you still make those. No one should grow up that much.

YES!!!!
I feel so validated.
I don't have a clue what that thing is but I, too, love making drippy sand castles.
Alligator poop? Ant/termite nest? Wasp home? Poke it with a stick and see what it does.
Looks like a big turd to me.
Maybe a fiddler crab? Roseanne Barr (again)?
Well if its up in a tree, it looks like some kind of HUGE hornet's nest. Or something similar that if it's poked will come out and swarm you!!! Bring wasp killer.
Worm castings, perhaps?
Pablo,
That's what I think. It was a swampy edge and the chimney is made of dribbley wet mud.
I think it's a crawfish burrow.
Gin,
Ditto here.
Billy,
Crawfish burrow, but if your yard is high and dry, you may have something else.
That will be $49.95 please.
Vicki,
Lately my Karma is undependable.
Lej,
Pretty sure this is a crawfish burrow.
Short,
Welcome to Pure Florida! I agree wholeheartedly ... still climb trees too.
Leslie,
Glad you are not alone in dobberness.
Glad I am not alone in dripcastlewonderness.
Freste,
Poking things just gets me running for my life usually.
Just Right,
Well fiddler crab is semi close.
Lynn,
Welcome!
This was on the ground near a cypress swamp.
Swampy,
If it were smaller, but it's about 6 inches high. I vote crawdaddy.
Mudbug.
well, if you ever lived in La. you know what it is. You can eat them or use them as bait, crawfish cher!!!
I agree with Anonymous (and all the others who said it first)! I haven't been away from the South long enough to forget what crawfish/crayfish/mudbug towers look like! :)
