Girls Gone Wild

Sunday, I had the opportunity to take these 4 college buddies through Devil's Hammock Wildlife Management Area.
It was noon, not the best time of the day for wildlife, but we still managed to see gators, a bobcat, and a deer that chose to run along in front of the JEEP for quite a ways instead of darting off into the bush.

Multiple views of our day.
It was an excellent day!

We stopped at a pretty spot along the Waccasassa River where they waded in and pulled up freshwater mussels for me to photograph.
An unexpected helgrammite came up in Emma's hand ... which was pretty exciting for a few seconds.
If you've seen one, you know why.

It was a blast being with such smart, funny people who were just excited to be there.

After the ride, we came home to PFHQ and ate steak, baked potato, and salad.

All in all , a pretty good day.

Oh it was such a fun trip! I love how i look like I'm gonna fall over the whole time in the video! I was just trying to avoid my shorts getting wet as they were a tad longer than everyone else.

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN MR.FC!!!!!!

love,
Laura

I had to go look up "helgrammite" and the close-up photographs are quite scary! I hope it doesn't look that menacing in real life!

It's so nice to hear your voice! :) And playing in the water is always a good way to spend an afternoon.

I bet your kids love showing off their daddy.

I expected you to sound more southern. Don't Floridians have a southern accent?

That looks like a grand day. Did you say you saw a bobcat? Excellent. I love knowing that they are roaming around everywhere. BTW-- You are quite the dad.

Those girls are SO lucky. To have an interest in nature, for one, and to spend a day with an extraordinary guide.

I think I've seen hellgramites, and they are very scary looking indeed.

Laura,
It was great having you visit and you know we always have a spot for you to crash!

Jen,
And they're feisty too!!

Dani,
(blush) I have broken the code of silence :)

Miz S,
Not as much as I love showing them off!
Growin' up on the coast ... southern accents seem much less pronounced, it's inland where they shine, although I slip in and out ... especially with some words.
Remember I have the sweetest yankee Momma, so I am a hybrid of sorts :)

Sharon,
It was tooootally awesome.

Kathy A,
And no written essay afterwards!

Robin,
Thanks!
Yes a bobcat dashed across in front of us as we cruised through a wooded track.

Deb,
I was pretty lucky too. These girls are just fun to be with and not afraid of stuff!
Well, maybe helgrammites, but who can blame them?
:)

I googled helgrammites too, right up there with leeches! Supposed to be mighty good bass bait. I'll let the Fisherman at our house catch, I'll cook anything he catches with those creepers!

thanks to all for sharing such fun. much of my early life was spent in creeks. your video put me right back there.

out here we use helgrammites for bait to catch trout.

Caroline,
Just look under a log or rock in a healthy stream and you'll probably find one.

roger,
glad you liked it and memories were triggered. I've heard they are good trout bait and I remember seeing flies in that pattern.

The crew that you were out with look like the probably took the helgrammite in stride. Definitely a cool find. Sounds like an awesome day.
