Last week, I slipped out to my friend Billy's swampy, rocky, beautiful chunk of land. I wrote about this place last year when I went out in search of rocks for the Waterfolly.
I've stuck in a few more tiny watering holes back at PFHQ and felt a need for more limestone, so I again found myself on Billy's little bit of heaven. It's nice out there this time of year. The cool temps keep the vast hordes of Gulf Hammock mosquitoes away and the property is much more inviting.
A decidedly unround rock ... and yet the pose seems vaguely familiar ... almost Missourian.
The greens in the background are part of Billy's feed plot to attract game during hunting season.
It pays to look up. Here's a widow maker lying in wait.
The feed plot turnips were flowering while I was there. Most of these lush greens were untouched, which just boggles me. I can't grow any turnip greens or collards at my place outside of the 7 foot tall deer fenced garden plot.
If I do, they get mowed to the ground by ungrateful ungulates.
Buckeye was beginning to bloom also. I remember writing about this last year and saying I was going back for seeds, but alas, I never did.
Maybe this year.
The violets were just beginning to take off. They will soon form a carpet over the trails and roads through the property.
The ride in ...
... was a little bumpy.

If I were of the mind to say so, seeing that rock, I might wonder if you'd stumbled on some ejecta from the Wakulla Volcano...
If you get seeds, could you send some to me?
COOL? Dawg, man, it's downright COLD! Never made 50 yesterday and was still below 40 at noon today. S'posed to be even colder tonight.
Glad ya looked up... something like that could wreck your day.
Thanks for sharing the flowers. It's been a while. We did see quite a few saucer and star magnolias blooming in Tally a few days back. Reckon they got a shock when temps hit teens.
What am I looking up to see??? I've looked twice. The branch? Maybe it's a good thing I don't go to the woods!

It always pays to look up-you never know what's flying overhead. And down-you never know what you're gonna step in.
That first picture is absolutely the pure Florida scenery that I know and miss. How beautiful. Glad the cold hasn't killed off the flowers or dampened your spirit of adventure.
Those violets are so pretty, my favorite color. It seems nice to see something growing this time of the year, especially up here, we can't even see the ground.
A very nice view of a different part of Florida. I like seeing what's blooming in your neck of the woods. Pretty soon there's going to be an explosion of color and scents. I can't wait.
That's a great point: where I grew up in Maryland all the rivers were rocky. My favorite park was called "Rock State Park." Down here, its a spongy landscape, and if it weren't for canals, you'd have to hunt deep into the swamps to find a chuck of exposed lime rock, or some lose limestone where a tree fell.
Have you tried predator scents to keep the deer from eating future Foodie Friday posts?
Lovely little road trip. I'm starting to more fully appreciate these incidental wild flowers here and there as I train to give tours at the nature preserve. I saw a beautiful orchid growing in the pine hammock the other day. The JEEP takes a licking and keeps on licking, yes?
Man you need some Black Sabbath in that Jeep. The scenery is Pure Florida. I have one of those widow makers hanging in my back yard at about 40 feet. I find myself worrying about the dog. He never looks up, except when you pick up his bowl. Thanks for the cool stuff you do.
Billy
Daniel,
Yeah, it's really chalky white, but was lying in some clayish soil.
Dani,
Yes.
Sophie,
Aint it wonderful!
Patti,
Hanging branches are widow makers cause if they fall on ya ...
Chris and Jon,
Stepped in something unpleasant this morning as a matter of fact.
ArkPatti,
The cold just fires me up. I love this weather!
Margaret,
All the more reason for me to post flower pics!
Robin,
Not long now!
Robert,
Here the rivers cut nice bluffs through the rock.
Troll,
No. Good point.
Vicki,
The JEEP is GOOOOOD.
I love the way you contribute whereever you go. There's a lesson there.
Billy,
There IS Black Sabbath in that JEEP. Ozzie was resting during that ride.
I'm sure there must be a few round rocks somewhere down there.
