I'm Over The Stray Dog Blues

Now these blues are more like it.

The basset of the Stray Dog Blues post went to the shelter today, as we can not afford to properly care for another dog at PFHQ.

I did contact a regional Basset Rescue organization and inform them, even though I think our shelter crew probably does that automatically.
I did enjoy and appreciate the many comments.
If you want the dog, email me and I will give you the shelter phone number.

Moving on ...

  • The blueberry crop is rolling in fast and furious now and I am picking (and eating) them as fast as I can.A few nights ago, I softened some peach ice cream and spooned it into a graham cracker crust over chunks of peaches and fresh blueberries. Then it went back into the freezer for an hour or so to firm up.Very tasty and necessary after the incredible pot of Texas Red I made last night.

  • The barred owls are back hanging around the house with a new chick. Emma spotted them a night or two ago, so I should have some fresh owl pics soon. Note: They will probably resemble last year's owl pics to be honest ... owl-oak branch-Spanish moss in the background.

  • I'll be reporting from South Florida soon, so stay tuned for a Crackerspective of the other side of Florida.

Oh stop it already with your tempting description of the blueberries and ice cream pie!! You're killing me!

And as for the owl pics, never too many of them. I take fresh ones of ours just about every day, and yes they usually do look the same. We just can't resist taking them though can we? Owls are just awesome. Kind of like gators ;)

Where you going in South Florida.
You are welcome at my Urban place for a visit or meet at my favorite water hole for a few drinks. West Palm Beach.

As I said on the other post, you did good by that old basset. I'm sure he appreciated your consideration and good food, and now having a nice dry place to sleep at the shelter.

I'm envious of your blueberries!

Is there a special type of blueberry that grows well in FL?

Good for you for taking the purty dog to a no-kill shelter.
You gonna have a mojito, and some black beans & yellow rice, for all the rest of us,while you're in SE Florida?

you did do well by the pup. but how can we resist liking such a sweetie, with his photo right there on the internet?

nice blueberries, too.

Mmm, look at those blueberries!

Oh, the eyes on the bassie. At least it's a no-kill shelter; we don't have such a concept around here. Hopefully the bassett hound rescue won't let him hang out there for long.

I'll be picking blueberries at the farm tomorrow - Dad says a bumper crop and ready to be picked!

You took care of your stray well. I'm wishing him the best also. He's a cutie.

Those blueberries look so delish. My plants started out small and didn't get very big this year. I think they might need more sun than they are getting. I'm going to hope for a better crop next year.
Have fun in S. FL.

Mmmmm. Peach ice cream! Your berries are looking good. Are they very sweet? I'm not a huge blueberry fan but if they're sweet...

Yeah, what Val said.

Where's Violet Beauregarde when you need her to sample some peachy ice cream?

I now have a hankering for fresh-off-the-bush blueberries, peach ice cream, etc.

Do birds grab a lot of your berries?

Val,
Welcome to Pure Florida! No, I can't ignore a big ol barred owl when I have my camera ... I just have to take his picture over and over again!

Smilin B,
Thanks!

nfmgirl,
I think he'll be fine. Called back to the shelter and they said a dog like that always gets rescued quick.

Carol,
You want the highbush rabbiteye types, which should be all they sell in FL ... some varieties are Climax, Beckyblue, Bluebelle, etc.
Carefree plants, but they like acid soil and they do not like drying out.

Chris and Jon,
That sounds like an excellent idea!

Kathy A,
I know, he was a charmer ... just needs to charm someone who wants him!

Country,
Welcome to Pure Florida! The shelter guy predicted he'd be adopted in a few days.

Sayre,
Remember to not eat them all as you pick ... put some in the bucket.

Meems,
If they are new transplants, better that they don't make fruit the first year anyway so they can grow their infrastructure.

Rurality,
Not sugary sweet, but scrumptious anyway and supposedly WAAAAYYY good for ya. Hope so, cause I'm dumping about a cup at a time on my Special K.

Freste,
I stepped in for the sampling task.

Miz S,
Honestly now, when do we not have that hankering? I share with the birds, but I also hang some rubber snakes in the bushes to make sure that it's not a 50/50 sharing deal.

Troll,
Line of duty. I need to go get educated.

I love a happy ending - good luck to the little guy. I also understand that you cannot save every stray in the world at your own house, or someone will put *you* in a shelter - or worse.

We'll have fresh blueberries here soon, too. Always a favorite. That pie sounds so simple I'm sure even I could make it.
