Stray Dog Blues

This starving dog showed up at PFHQ yesterday evening ... so of course we fed him.
He is not staying though.
I am not one of those "I adopt every stray animal that passes my door" type of people.

So... what will we do with him?
He will get lots of food here for a few days to build up his strength and then, pending divine intervention in the form of one of those, "I do adopt every stray animal I see" type of people, he will go to our local No Kill shelter and we wish him luck.

He's friendly, really, really needs a bath, and has a bit of "mange" on his earflaps.

... And, as you can see from this picture, his front legs have issues, but they don't seem to bother him.

So, you're keeping him then?

So,what are you going to name him?

Oh my gosh, he is adorable! Seems to be a puppy compared to other basset hounds I've met. The odd leg formation is pretty 'normal' for the breed. Hope he finds a great home!

WHAT a sweet face!!

Poor old guy... he's lucky he found you rather than the underside of a car. Or the business end of a snake.

Someone will give him a home. He's so sweet-looking!

FC-
C'mon man...look at those eyes! He needs you! If I were already there I'd take him, but I'm not sooo...take good care of him and I guess we'll get to meet him next time we're down there, LOL!

I'm thinking you're going to have trouble resisting those sad, sad eyes.

Do the labs and yutes get a vote? Regardless, it's nice of you to give him a bath and a few days of safety and good clean food.

Hey, you don't have to adopt every animal. You just try to help them out, and get them to someone who is in a position to try to find them a home.

I think what you see in his front legs isn't that uncommon among basset hounds. Sweet boy. It's in his eyes.

(Yep. I AM one of those people who adopts most of the animals that I come across. That's why I have five cats!)

Look at those eyes. Look deeply in those pools of liquid chocolate. Umm, now I want a Godiva bar.

Awww...he looks like he belongs on the front porch :) He looks like an "Ernie" to me.

Could he have an id chip inside him?
Glad he's got y'all there to give him lots of TLC.

If you have access to a no-kill shelter and if they have room for your strays, you are one lucky guy. We get lots of abandoned animals within a couple of miles of our house, and our local pound is definitely not no-kill. It's always an ethical dilemma, especially for one dog lover and one soft-hearted person.

That face! He wants to stay. I can just tell. If you take him to the shelter he will probably escape and keep coming back to your place. He loves you, he really really loves you. Ernie loves you :)

Shoot, if I lived closer and could afford to feed another mouth, I'd take Baxter home in a heartbeat. Bassetts are among my top five favourite dogs ever.

Would yuo believe my word for the day is keepme? No? Oh, well, I gave it a shot, lol!

what a sweetheart! i have a strict no-more-dogs rule, but -- i'm pretty sure i'd be outvoted if he showed up at our house.

are you absolutely certain that none of your students dropped him off, as a place of refuge? hard to imagine this guy hiking out to your place all by himself.

Aw, poor thing.

Be careful not all no kill shelters are really no kill. Also the Mange might be demodex or sarcoptic. Sarcoptic is contagious to people and other animals. Todd

He's very, very cute, fc. Have you named him yet? I'm sure you've checked the missing pet ads and not found anyone crying over their sweet, sad-eyed boy? I hope he finds a good home. He sure looks adopt-able to me. But then again, Roger and I adopted cat with weird, wacky legs.

Aw he'll be fine. Someone'll take him in.

But CONGRATULATIONS the students are gone! Unfortunately, you're not through just yet at that often vile place. : (

Be seeing you!

Dang, poor pup. He sure knew which house to show up to, though.

Tell your son to give him a bath, spread an old towell on the porch, and name him "ernie".
Oh, and more food.

What a nice looking dog.

Poor dog, its too bad that people do this kind of thing to dogs. Yes, I agree you can't save all animals.

I can only echo many of the commenters: he's lucky he found his way to you. Starving to death is a horrible way to go.

Carol said...

From the number of comments you got on this one...I think you better keep him...we'll all be checking in to see how he's doing.

He's just the thing to round out the dog posse at PF! Congrats. He's very cute and has those "please, please, please" eyes. Bet he smells good, too! (Actually, I'm betting you already gave him a bath.)

Hi - your blog popped up on our "google alerts" and wow ... what a sweet guy (the basset hound) found you ... he is obviously purebred - looks unneutered? check to see if he is chipped ... then you could contact Basset Rescue http://www.suncoastbassetrescue.org/ ... good luck & he is lucky that you have offered some safe harbour ... bassets are such sweet gentle dogs ...

Oh but Daddy can't we please keep him. Pretty please?! Hehehe. Love you - Katy Bug

kathy a. said...

what did you cook him for dinner? oh, don't tell me you aren't feeding this guy anything special.

Freste said...

Oh come on, FC... He showed up on your doorstep because of all that fried food in the previous post. No "Brownie Pillows" for him but I'll take 'em. And yer dotter thinks he's a keeper... Oh come on... The chickens will love him.

the word will git around that ya have a soft heart, FC!

LOL!

Apparently y'all are (mostly) ignoring the part about I am not one of those people who adopt every stray animal that passes my door!

He's at the shelter and I contacted a basset rescue group and notified them, so my conscience is clean, soothed by the affection of my own 3 chosen and well fed, well cared for, Retrievers.
We do what we can, said the broke father of two college students ... soon to be three.

kathy a. said...

you'll be checking on him, right?

You did good, FC. No one can fault you. Even us crazy animal lovers who have a hard time turning anything away!
