How About a Little More Schoolyard Osprey?

At 7:00 AM Monday,, this osprey was perched high in a playground live oak, trying to stay warm.
Over night, the temperature had dipped down into the 30's and a light breeze made it feel a little colder.
The school ospreys are very acclimated to humans, so they pretty much go about their ospreyish business without paying much attention to we of the wingless clan.
Occasionally, gangs of bald eagles will swoop in to harass the schoolyard ospreys, but it never seems to come to blows.
A few weeks ago 3 eagles were strafing the two ospreys as they sat on their ball field light post nest.
By the time I realized what was happening outside the lab and grabbed my camera, they were sailing off, leaving the ospreys frazzled, but not harmed.

I think it was a case of mullet envy.

Ospreys vs Bald Eagles! That's waaaaay more fun gang activity than the kind we get in *my* school's neighborhood.

I think they're beautiful birds! I remember when Matt and I spent a weekend at the sailboat we saw one dive down and snatch a fish out of the water just behind the stern while we were sitting in the slip, it was magnificant!

Spectacular! Love both the ospreys and the eagles...so great that we have the opportunity to enjoy them in S Fl. Nice captures!

Miz S,
Yup, if you have to pick your gang activity, always pick the avian raptor kind!

Dave,
Every day one or the other school ospreys flies over showing off his/her most recent catch!

Anon,
Thanks! They are really amazing animals.
