NORTH FLORIDA SUPERHERO SCRAMBLE 2012

DISCLAIMER: There's a lot of "me" photos in this post, but I'm trying to tell the story of the NORTH FLORIDA SUPERHERO SCRAMBLE and I ran as an individual, not a team, so ... whatayagonna do?
The photos get progressively more unflattering as you go through the post so I guess that balances things out.
Also, there is a GOPRO video coming. I'm working on stitching 25 edited, short POV clips together into one reasonable length video. That video will show almost every single obstacle ... there were 25.

Okay, that's out of the way.

Let us begin at the beginning ...

My next to last clean picture.

The Scramble is divided into "waves". Mine was the 11:00 am wave and the photo above is about 15 minutes to go time. A swarm of folks arrived just before the start, so this wave was loaded with superheroes.

Just out of the gate and already mudded!

The bars on the left side of this picture are closer together and easier. They had a long line when I approached so I took the wider bars since that lane was open with no traffic.

Making sure the GoPro is on before taking the "LEAP OF FAITH" jump into a pit of muddy water.

That's my splash!  Mrs. FC took photos of the obstacles that she could see. Most take place away from the audience areas. This post only shows what she could see.

The second lake crossing near the end of the race. The murky water felt so refreshingly good.
I confess to lingering a while and cooling off on this "obstacle".
I loved all the climbing obstacles. This one takes you over the top of a tall building at the Waldo race track and then you descend by jumping from round hay bale to round hay bales on the other side.

This rope climb was the last hard obstacle. That's me standing on the word "SUPER".
Coincidence?
I zipped right up this one (knotless rope by the way, ...the ones to the right had some helper knots).

Right at the cusp, my feet slipped on the wet plywood and I lost my good crouching form.

Up and over thanks to coaching by the guy next to me in this picture. I slipped right at the crest and when I reached up to grab the lip, there wasn't one due to a board I could not see.
On the GoPro video, you can see and hear him telling me where to reach to grasp the edge and pull up.
Thanks nameless helper dude!

The final "obstacle?" ... or reward?

On the GoPro video, you hear me make a little, 12 year old girly sounding, "Ohhh" as I take off.
Stuff like that keeps me humble and gives my daughters a good laugh.

This is the slime pit you land in after the big slide.
It felt wonderful too.

And finally, the finish!
This thing was so fun. They can call it a race, but no one seemed to be worried about times,
It was all about the experience.
Get tired?
Walk a bit. You don't have to run unless you want to do so. I did a mix.
I did all the obstacles, but if something is too scary or too risky for you, they have an option.
You grab a stick and do the twirly bat thing 10 times with your forehead on the stick.

The atmosphere was great with lots of helping hands and advice when people had trouble at obstacles.

Definitely not a "cutthroat competition" event, although they do have a "Scramble Gamble" wave that probably is like that in the morning.

I plan to do more of these "mudder" type events as cash and time allow.
Maybe, you'll be there too!

For the record:
Events not shown on this first Superhero Scramble post:
  • 3 hurdles
  • clay hill, mud pit, clay hill
  • spider web ropes
  • leaky pipes crawl
  • sand bag carry
  • dark, wet tunnels
  • fire leap
  • cables across a lake
  • cargo net climb
  • rock wall climb
  • real barbed wire crawl in mud pit
  • mud puddle
  • ice bath underwater swim
  • tire pyramid
  • hay bale descent
  • marines with padded blocking
I'm probably forgetting something, but you get the idea. It was all spread out over 4 miles.

I will have that video up later this week, so check back for what it looked like from my perspective.

See you at the next one!

This race sounds like something I would have liked at a much younger age.

But that sound out of your mouth - I'm sure it sounded just like a scared guy, not a 12 year old girl. Girls don't need to be characterized as scared helpless beings. And I expect a girl might just have well have let out a Kong Foo kind of yell.

Ah, it's been a long time since I engaged in such activities. I've been quite inactive. Thanks for this, I'm somehow driven to take on different forms of race. Good luck to your endeavors! :)

I didn't expect it to be so much fun for everyone. What a great attitude by racers and those creating the event. I loved your pictures and descriptions. The video sounds like it will really be fun! Thanks, FC.

I was looking for you in the Sun photos but it was probably the earlier people. Glad you had fun and you came out alive!

M,
Relax, I wasn't stereotyping. I raised two strong young women who can do anything any boy can do. However, I did sound just like them when they were "tweens" and something spooked them.
Trust me, there were plenty of women at this even that were in better shape than most males I encounter, including myself.

Aprille,
I think we all need to be more active and there are lots of degrees of that. Good luck to you too!

Suzanne,
There were lots of age ranges there. In fact, the DJ could have filtered his tunes just a little bit more considering the age of some of the kids. You only heard his music at the start and finish though.
Definitely a fun time.

Cindy,
You have run a half marathon, this has gotta be easier than that. Get a baby sitter and get D out there with you next time!

Great adventure, but it doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. You're an alpha male!

You really know how to have fun and push yourself! That's very cool, FC.

Hey FC,

Looks like a great time. I almost went but figured I'd never run into you guys!

You did great.....

Pablo,
Beta version of that? LOL! I think I saw some Alphas there though.

Robin,
I was needing a push near the end!

Patio,
I know, the thing went on into the night and there were a zillion folks there, but that would have been cool!
