A tern chick. Least terns nest high on the beach, often just in front of the dunes or behind them. The nest consists of a shallow depression in the sand and camouflaged eggs and chicks.
Hick, I took this while we were fencing off a tern nesting area back in my Ranger days. We moved on quick 'cause the sun can overheat the chicks without one of the parents shading it. They blend in great.

Where is the mom? Do they regularly leave their chicks so exposed? Pretty well camo'd, though. I might have stepped on the little guy.
