A tern chick. Least terns nest high on the beach, often just in front of the dunes or behind them. The nest consists of a shallow depression in the sand and camouflaged eggs and chicks.  Posted by Picasa

Where is the mom? Do they regularly leave their chicks so exposed? Pretty well camo'd, though. I might have stepped on the little guy.

Hick,
I took this while we were fencing off a tern nesting area back in my Ranger days. We moved on quick 'cause the sun can overheat the chicks without one of the parents shading it. They blend in great.
