It's Pretty Springy Down Here

This is one of countless springs that empty into the Suwannee River. Some are huge, named, and popular spots for recreation. Others are tucked away in out of the way places that only locals frequent. Many small springs are normally under the river's surface and all but invisible during normal or high water situations.

This little gusher was exposed by low river levels a few years ago. We canoed over to it and eased carefully down into the 72 degree water flowing from the limerock. It was extremely refreshing until your lips began to turn blue.

Nice shot of a pretty spring!
It reminds me of canoeing down the Current River in Missouri. It's also a predominantly spring fed river. Man, on a hot summer day that water was cold!

Oh yes, that looks refreshing. I remember swimming in DeFuniak Springs, which was cold and a strange coppery color water.

We get our water from a spring. It's the best.
When I was a kid there was one on St. Pete Beach that bubled up sulpher water. You could smell it for quite a distance. But back then the tap water had a definate sulpher taste.

Sounds like you all had fun. Guess Florida just has springs left - I haven't heard of any artisia wells for years - I'll have to blog on those.

I can remember many floats down the Current River in Missouri. Good times.

What a beautiful spring. That looks like a great way to spend a day. 72 degrees! That's hot-tub water! Most of the river water we get to play in is fed by snow melt.

That's pretty warm water for a spring...ours are so cold you can't stand your hand in them for very long. I remember wading in one once and my feet got so painfully cold that I had to get out...but it had the biggest crawdads that I have ever seen in my life in it...they must thrive in frigid water.

RD,
When it's 98 degrees, that 72 feels frigid! Now in the winter, if you brave it, it's delicious.

Mac,
I love sulfur water. My Papa's artesian well was sulfur.

Doubleknot,
Most of the known ones have been capped and alot of the old ones no longer have the pressure to flow well.

Dave and Pablo,
The Current River? What's wrong, did they run out of creative or interesting river names out there?

Zanne,
I've snorkeled Defuniak...been awhile though.

Abandoned,
Florida groundwater comes out of the ground at an average temp of 70-72 degrees. Incredibly refreshing in the summer.

Tim,
It is.
